Ohio university capstone course order do my internship report on paper industry estrategias sanitarias nacionales slideshare presentations ´╗┐thank you it's a great pleasure to be here with you today to share with you some thoughts about the book project and how I came about writing the spoken and the reasons behind this and so I really appreciate you taking time out of your schedule to to be here and engaging this conversations as you know I've been studying this issue for the last three or four years now and I've been observing the Congressional discussions about immigration reform and the need to address the plight of approximately 12 million individuals who live in the United States today without legal authorization and among these 12 million our children students young adults who have lived most of their life here the United States foods memories are only of the United States because they were brought here when they were children infants before school age most of the time and yet you know as they make their way through the educational system and we reach that critical juncture of high school graduation looking for the next level of opportunity many of them for the first time come to learn about their abandoned de status and slowly begin to realize the challenges in the obstacles that await them and so this book was really an attempt to inform public discourse about undocumented students the title we are Americans comes from one of the central themes that emerged from the interviews that I my graduate students conducted over a period of a little bit over a year we interviewed 102 students all across the country most of them were from California and Texas which are the two states with the largest population of a documented you but we also interviewed students from Illinois from Georgia from New York Virginia Massachusetts North Carolina you know students that lived in historically immigrant receiving States led Texas in California but all the students that live in the emerging immigrant community state states that historically have not had large immigrant populations but because of the need for their labor primarily in manufacturing and agriculture are now making their way to the Midwest places like Iowa Idaho North Carolina Georgia and there are virgin community in these places and the challenges for students there are that you know there's not an established output for them to draw and so the challenges and obstacles for them are have been even more difficult to overcome comparative students who live in states like California where there are historically long-established immigrant movies and so in the interviews as well here shortly i'm going to need a chapter of the story of stasha who is a university about the decision that the central theme for then appear identity is an American identity and it's an identity that in public discourse is not acknowledged oftentimes almost every single new story article that you read on the paper of cs CNN or Fox News or any of these other media outlets you here to keep turns being used to characterize dis population illegal and avian and so in our analysis of the public discourse about undocumented students one of the things that stand out is that Americans those that have legal citizenship residency don't view the undocumented population as a reference they don't see them as being one of us rather as being something different someone a group that doesn't share any similarities and so I decided to write this book to highlight how in fact they are very much like us that in we have more things in common particularly our desire to fully engage in a democratic society and contribute to it will be and this was particularly poignant in the patterns of volunteerism and community service that emerged in the interviews and this was something that was you know very eminent expected you know I went into this word looking at what other education experiences like and although there is a rich story there but was more salient was the civic engagement and other way as I was preparing my comments for today I was reminded of the case that came before the Supreme Court back in 1922 the case of a cow ozawa first of the United States and mr. ozawa had long wanted to become an American citizen but at the time he was far from doing so by American immigration laws that disallow agents from becoming citizens in his legal which he wrote himself well that will argue that he should be considered as an individual with the moral character necessary to become an American citizen so I will read you too abstracts from his brief the first one he states i quote i neither drink liquor of any kind nor smoke nor play cards no gamble nor associate with any improper person my ID and my industriousness are well known about my japanese and american acquaintances and friends and i have always tried my best to conduct myself according to the golden rule but you also made a more important second argument where he states in name general Benedict Arnold was an American but heart he was a traitor in name I am NOT an American but at heart I'm a true American it is my honest hope to do something good from the United States before I bid farewell to this world now a few weeks later was the supreme court handed down this decision it actually recognizes in its statement ozawa armaments and so I quote from the statement handed down by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court where he says the appellant is a person of Japanese race born in Japan including the period of his residence in Hawaii appellant recited in the United States for 20 years he was a graduate of girly cow' high school have been nearly three years of student at the University of California had educated his children in American schools his family had attended American churches and he had maintained the use of the English language in his home that he was well qualified by character and education for citizenship is conceded so the Court recognized that if we use that criteria for citizenship he was morally horrible nevertheless despite recognizing the validity of izawa arguments the Supreme Court ruled that a dog walk was not eligible for citizenship citizenship exclusion based on rates remain in effect in the United States for another 30 years until nineteen fifty two today thousands of undocumented students across the country faced the same explosion than ozawa experienced students like Sasha that I will share with you her story and you know I share with you ozawa isn't sort of excerpts from available food to see some of the things that you did that demonstrated is to American Society so let me read to you the story of sasha sasha is a chapter 10 in the book and the sun hating that i have there is says you'll never get an a in my class because your dirty mexican so here's the story of software confident tenacious these are my initial impressions of Russian at college sophomore when I first matter Silas is just like do my bsn nursing capstone project proposal example Parsons School of Design.
