I am a VP in our global business org here in Google. And it's my incredible pleasure to welcome you all here and, of course, to welcome [? Khan ?] [? up, ?] who is just behind stage, anxious to get on. I just-- by way of introducing him, I just wanted to give you a quick personal anecdote about my memories of him. And my first memories of him go back 25-ish years, when I would go to watch his uncle, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, in Lahore. And those concerts were called [URDU] in the vernacular because they were a more intimate affair. And of course, everyone went to see Nusrat, right? Rap wasn't wall-known there. But you could not avoid noticing this gentleman. He was a kid, really. It's awkward to call him gentleman. I don't even think he was a teenager then. And he was there, flanked by legends, belting out his parts with supreme confidence, amazing poise, no care for the world, getting some, mostly, I think, glancings from his uncle and his father, full of pride. Once in a while, maybe some annoyance if he messed something up. But spare a thought for this kid, who was-- having been born in a family of legends, but the pressure that must have been on him. And sitting there with these legends, holding his own, and the journey he's been in, and the legend that he's become in his own right. And what amazing hard work it must have taken from him. Certainly an inspiration for us. And so I was thinking of it this morning as I was thinking about introducing him, because I was like, oh, my god, in front of hundreds of Googlers. And you guys are a tough crowd, because I've done TGIF once, and you know, that meme stuff really scares me, guys. Plus, they told me they're going to live stream it. Somewhere, my wife-- my mom's watching it. My wife's right here. The one I worry about the most is my sister, because you know, the last place you want familial critique is during work hours. You do not want that. Anyway, so we're going to show you a quick reel of Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and his journey starting off as a kid, and what he's done. He's done amazing, unique venues like being at the Nobel Prize, being at the UN General Assembly, and then reaching out to hundreds of millions of his fans on YouTube. So with that, let's roll the video, please. [VIDEO PLAYBACK] [MUSIC PLAYING] - [NON-ENGLISH SINGING] ANWAR AKRAM: That's him. - [NON-ENGLISH SINGING] [END PLAYBACK] [APPLAUSE] ANWAR AKRAM: So let's not forget our social media hashtag for today, which is [? RFAKatGoogle. ?] And with that, now that you've had enough of me, please join me in welcoming Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan onto the stage. [APPLAUSE] ANWAR AKRAM: Thank you so much. RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [INAUDIBLE] ANWAR AKRAM: Can't believe I get to meet the man in the flesh. [LAUGHTER] ANWAR AKRAM: Oh, my god. [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: Thank you very much. ANWAR AKRAM: Welcome to Google. As you can see, we have hundreds of Googlers here. RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] I'm very proud of [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]. ANWAR AKRAM: Thank you. There were hundreds more, but this was all we could accommodate [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] in order to figure out who could make it and be here. But I understand you have a big concert tonight, and I hope many of you will be going there. It's sold out by the way, if you haven't bought tickets yet, just FYI. So [INAUDIBLE] talking about your concert, the tour that you're on, [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH], and you've been to the US several times. This time I heard something different. It's about a tribute. RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [INAUDIBLE] to build a tribute tour established within the concept because our 20th anniversary. We had started from this April of [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] 20th anniversary. [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] ANWAR AKRAM: Wow, amazing, wonderful. Though the content will be different, I assume. RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] ANWAR AKRAM: Amazing. So thinking about your start, [INAUDIBLE] what was the childhood like with him? [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [LAUGHTER] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] ANWAR AKRAM: Just to have a rough sense, how many hours a day were you practicing? [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] practice [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [LAUGHTER] [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] ANWAR AKRAM: [INAUDIBLE] what we did, [INAUDIBLE] in preparation, we had asked Googlers all over the world to send in questions to ask of you. Because we don't have a lot of time. You have things you need to do preparing for your concert. So we picked a few questions, and the Googlers who asked it made a video and sent it. So if we can roll the video for the first question. This is about you doing Sufi music, commercial music, and how that works. So if we can get the video, please. [VIDEO PLAYBACK] - [SPEAKING IN UNISON] [INAUDIBLE] Thank you so much for coming and talking to us at Google. - We're all big fans, and we love your music. - We have a question for you. Is it a personal challenge for you to balance commercial music and Sufi music? [END PLAYBACK] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] ANWAR AKRAM: So just following up, please go ahead. [APPLAUSE] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: Thank you very much. ANWAR AKRAM: Just following up on that, Qawwali, which is the core, the anchor of your repertoire is six, 700-year-old Sufi art form. Do you ever worry [INAUDIBLE] modernization [INAUDIBLE] we will lose that tradition? RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] ANWAR AKRAM: That's great. [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] and they want to tell you about their favorite songs, and maybe ask about yours. So if you can roll the video, please. [VIDEO PLAYBACK] - Hello! - Hi. - [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] And we are huge fans. You've sung so many soulful songs. And each one of us has a favorite. My favorite is [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]. - I like [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]. - My favorite is [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]. - I like [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]. - And our question is that which are your favorite soulful songs which have been sung by other singers? - And if you could sing a few lines from those. [LAUGHTER] [END PLAYBACK] ANWAR AKRAM: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] They ask. RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [APPLAUSE] ANWAR AKRAM: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [LAUGHTER] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] ANWAR AKRAM: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH], all right. [INAUDIBLE], you know, Sufi music-- I'm just thinking about the message of the Sufi music. And how you travel the world, you know, all over Asia, Europe, the US, Africa. What is the message there in Sufi music, and how do you convey it? You know, people can understand the music obviously. [INAUDIBLE] lyrics [INAUDIBLE] messenger. How does that get through to all these different people-- who don't have the cultural context [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] message [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] How does it work? RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] music [INAUDIBLE] universal language. [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] musically universal language. [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] ANWAR AKRAM: Thank you. You know, we're at Google. And as you know, YouTube is a part of Google. And between Google and YouTube, I think you were telling me that this has been huge for you as an artist for getting your message out. RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [LAUGHTER] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] ANWAR AKRAM: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [INAUDIBLE] Maybe we can ask him to come up and talk a little bit about how they're using YouTube and Google to promote Khan [INAUDIBLE] and his message. Salman, if you can-- [APPLAUSE] ANWAR AKRAM: Join us on stage. Oh. RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [INAUDIBLE] SALMAN: [INAUDIBLE] ANWAR AKRAM: Thank you for coming, Salman. SALMAN: I was told to come from there. [INAUDIBLE] ANWAR AKRAM: OK, that's good. SALMAN: Hi, everyone. ANWAR AKRAM: So Salman, you know, you've been doing a lot with [? Hansa ?] for the past several years in terms of thinking about Google and YouTube and taking his message and music into the world. Do you want to talk a little bit about, you were telling me about the songs [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH], for example, and the impact it's had and why it's different. You want to talk a little bit about how you think of Google, how you think of YouTube, and how you think about using that to help [? Hansa. ?] SALMAN: Yes, fortunately this is my beginning of seventh year with [? Hansa. ?] And it's been magical in every way. Not because I'm next to [? Hansa, ?] and within Google, I think, in their own way. One is an engine in its own way, and one we say is our engine who [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] musically, [? Hansa ?] is a family, is a legacy of 600 years. And for us, I've done hundreds of concerts [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] with [? Hansa ?] all over the world. And each time, we actually listen to him, it's like listening to him for the first time. So [? Hansa, ?] thank you for giving us this pleasure each time. And now talking about connectivity. You know, from the classical era of the family they are, the tradition they are, the existence of social media, the connectivity, I felt that when we came as their management and globally as their promoters as well. There was a gap. It's not that [? Hansa ?] does not have billions of followers. I mean there's a punch line we came out with, one world, one artist, billion followers. Now how do we get to those billion followers? Billion followers, Google will take us, your platforms will take us, YouTube in particular. [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH], an album which I was fortunately the producer of, 2014, [? Hansa? ?] And we named it "Back 2 Love." [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] SALMAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [LAUGHTER] SALMAN: We were sitting in New York when the thought of this, in a time frame when singles and albums were not being made, you know, because of the physical sales not happening. So [? Hansa ?] said, I want to take out my music. I want to reach out to the world as much as, you know, everybody's following his films. So ten magical tracks, [? Hansa. ?] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: Yes. SALMAN: And more interestingly, [INAUDIBLE] when we were doing the order for that album, it was 12 tracks initially. We based it on cricket. I mean, cricket is very much part of a lot of our lives. But we said, [? Hansa, ?] let's name songs one to 10 as batsman are. So usually the best batsman are at number 4. And we said inspiration of such [INAUDIBLE], [? Vivian ?] [? Richards ?] [? traveled ?] with me a lot, and many of the legends. [INAUDIBLE] was one track. And I would like [? Hansa ?] to say a bit more about [INAUDIBLE], that when he made me listen to it. In how many seconds, I said, [? Hansa, ?] this is the song of the album. So I let [? Hansa ?] speak about [INAUDIBLE]. RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] album called [INAUDIBLE] [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] SALMAN: Just modestly 195 million views thanks to everybody here and everybody who's made it happen. [APPLAUSE] SALMAN: Thank you. And [INAUDIBLE] thanks to YouTube, because [INAUDIBLE] was the platform. Otherwise, [? Hansa, ?] [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] And as a non-film, non-Bollywood film song, I think it just says a lot. That if you have the right platform, you have the right voice behind it, the right talent, the combination that [INAUDIBLE] nothing's impossible. And [? Hansa, ?] this is what I'm going to do now. You might behind the stage [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]. I think for all the people at Google who have and thank you, [INAUDIBLE] yo team have been magnificent in a very short while of putting this together. Hansa [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] Would you agree [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [APPLAUSE] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [SINGING] ANWAR AKRAM: Wow! [APPLAUSE] Wow. I think we can call it a day and go home and sleep now. That was amazing. Thank you so much, [? Hansa. ?] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [INAUDIBLE] Thank you very much. [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [APPLAUSE] ANWAR AKRAM: Wonderful. Salman, how were you thinking about using YouTube, perhaps, for the promotion of this album? Any thoughts there you can share with us? SALMAN: Actually, with the lessons we've had and learned with [INAUDIBLE], we're actually thinking and wanting to only consider YouTube-- ANWAR AKRAM: Nice. SALMAN: --as an independent platform because it says it all. You know when your platform is there, it reaches the globe, why do we really need to go knock on any label? We'll definitely love to talk to you first. And [? a bit ?] about the name, just Qawwali because I think there has to be a thought behind everything. You know names can be any. The idea is Qawwali is just not for all of us from Southeast Asia. Qawwali, the spirituality, is for everybody who is in this world. So that is why we've thought of a name which will appeal to the masses, the mainstream. And [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [? Hansa ?] has done wonders [INAUDIBLE] so I'm sure that you will genuinely like it. So we've got some very nice plans which we would definitely love to explore with your platform as well. ANWAR AKRAM: Wonderful. Last question. Colin Larson, from our office in San Francisco, has asked you a question about Qawwali. If we can roll the video for that, please. [VIDEO PLAYBACK] - Hi, I'm Colin. Googler from the San Francisco office. I'm a huge fan. The question I have for you is about the clapping in the Qawwali tradition. Can you walk us through a demonstration of how to clap properly like a Qawwal? Thank you. [END PLAYBACK] [LAUGHTER] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] clap. [APPLAUSE] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: Thank you. ANWAR AKRAM: [? Hansa, ?] I think-- [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] SALMAN: Demonstration. ANWAR AKRAM: Demonstration. RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] ANWAR AKRAM: Amazing, amazing. And Colin is here. Colin, you should probably come up on stage, buddy. RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: Colin is here. I remember him. [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] ANWAR AKRAM: There we go. Oh, should we get the musicians, too? RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: Yes. ANWAR AKRAM: We can get the musicians to come up. SALMAN: Great, thank you. [APPLAUSE] SALMAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [APPLAUSE] [WARMING UP, TESTING INSTRUMENTS] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [MUSIC PLAYING] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [INAUDIBLE] clap for you. [APPLAUSE] [MUSIC PLAYING] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [SINGING] [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [APPLAUSE] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [INAUDIBLE] [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [MUSIC PLAYING] [SINGING] [APPLAUSE] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [MUSIC PLAYING] [SINGING] [APPLAUSE] RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] [CHEERING] ANWAR AKRAM: [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH] That was amazing, [? Hansa. ?] Amazing, thank you so much. Thank you very much. Thank you all for being here, and thank you for giving him a rousing reception. I think he got carried away with the moment. He was not going to sing that much, and that's just amazing. [CHEERING] ANWAR AKRAM: [? Hansa. ?] Now we've got to figure out how we go back and work after this. Thank you guys. Hope you enjoyed it. kkr capstone sydney order Grey Nuns.
