Write for me kapstone paper charleston sc for money capstone partners australia for money annotated outline apa 6th we have Marc Benioff here from Salesforce this morning or your morning our evening at the show our evening it's dark out and we're tired right it's go a long time we don't actually know what day or night is that's irrelevant to us right we started early this morning when you did know where you were and we had a provocative conversation you made some pretty provocative comments about the tech world in Silicon Valley and really taking responsibility speak to that well I mean for us it's a natural I mean when we started our business now almost 20 years ago we put 1% of our equity 1% of our profit and 1% of all of our employees time into a foundation it was easy because we had no employees right oh we had no time but the thing is it really set the culture you know we had a purpose we knew that we wanted to do something that it was important to us they weren't just gonna build a product but we were gonna build a company and that company was gonna do something to improve the world not just make the software industry better which we also did which was great but is there something fundamentally broken now about not your culture but the culture in in the valley cuz that's what you spoke about this morning I don't think it's fundamentally broken I just think that you have two worlds one world is companies that are Purpose Driven and CEOs that are Purpose Driven that there's clarity on what is it that you really want what do you want to achieve what is really important to you are you focused on the fundamental trust that you have with your customers and then you have a bifurcation where you have companies or CEOs maybe that are only focused on the product and when you're only focused on the product and not on the culture and not on your community that's what you so interesting that you say product that we're not profit because in most other industries people talk about there's too much focus on the profit not the product well it's both right this is about doing you can do it all and and that I think that's one of the things the Salesforce now has grown and been more successful I think we have the proof point that you can do both you also said something that got a lot of attention around here and on the air which is the idea of regulation and technology companies and this idea that you think Washington is coming well I just think that we're the same industry is every other industry and you can see in financial services the government has involved consumer product goods food technology the government is gonna have to be involved you say they have to be should they be meaningless so far the technology industry has managed to fend off the government in terms of rape there is some regulation but there probably will have to be more you can see use cases that are happening where you're gonna want more regulation what do you talk about what do you speak well you seem like this kind of situation where elections are being manipulated by outside forces that's probably an opportunity for the government to look and say okay so effective we're talking about Facebook now how would you regulate a Facebook well I think you do it exactly the same way that you regulate of the cigarette industry you know here here's a product cigarettes it they're addictive you know they're not good for you maybe there's all kinds of different forces trying to get you to do certain things there's a lot of parallels I know you feel by the way about social media for the most part yeah no meaning it thinking about it as like a cigarette in that in that kind of addictive way I think that for sure technology has addictive qualities that we have to address and that product designers are working to make those products more addictive and we need to reign reign that back as much so responsibility though of the technology companies or and you know this conversation is now morphed into one about technology and children last week obviously Jana went out and CalSTRS came out against Apple saying they needed to do more where's the responsibility lie well nothing's more important than our children's you know health and education you know I feel about that I mean I've built two Children's Hospital's we're putting tens of million dollars into our public schools here you know now you're in our zone I mean I feel like that that's where we should be spending all of our attention we should be focused on are we getting our kids ready for this for that the revolution that is happening it's the very thing we're talking about the relationship that that kids if you will have with tech nology and was whose issue but who is supposed to be the monitor of that the technology companies in round number one right parents have to do their job just like you know we talked about on your panel and number two if there's you know an unfair advantage or things that are out there that aren't that are not understood by parents then the government's got to come forward and illuminate that you can see that right now in the food industry with sugar right for a long time we didn't understand the kind of the the issues with sugar now we do implications of the tax reform plan on Salesforce how's it gonna change your business I don't think it's gonna have any kind of material impact I think the biggest thing is that there is a huge amount of exuberance with CEOs around the tax plan so that that remain that the kind of what I would call economic freight train is gonna continue and you're seeing that in your business you guys raise guidance not once twice but now four times for 2018 you want to raise it again while we're here I don't think that uh rir is gonna let me do that do that but in terms of just using Salesforce we can probably because we get guidance and proxy for the rest of the economy we have seen the freight train is still on the track I think so I think it's an economic freight train and things are every CEO is bullish and one of the things about Davos is that it tends to be a tremendous measurement of where things are I mean you and I were both here in two thousand eight nine ten and you can see when everybody's walking around with their head now no one's walking around with their head down people are excited and they're feeling good about right the world final question President Trump is gonna be here on Friday what do you want to hear him say well I want him to bring everybody together in a positive way I think this is really important I think it's really important that it's not about isolation but it's about integration and that he does very much what President Xi did last year which is kind of a major unifying speech that shows the United States's role in the world setting values and has a clear no star on where we're all going on what odds you putting on them giving that speech that you just laid out I'm not a betting man you know odds stavos not Vegas fan Marc Benioff thank you is late Marc a long day on that note we're going to send it back to you guys in New York hey
