Write for me internet of things blog microsoft capstone crossfit lubbock english literature essay art welcome to survey of British literature to the 1600s through the 1900s now if you're taking this class you probably should make sure that you've already taken survey of British literature one in that course we looked at English dating back to the anglo-saxon time period and Beowulf and King Arthur and Chaucer and all of that stuff that makes up what we think of as British culture today this course takes it a step further it takes us from the reign of Queen Elizabeth the first up until the reign of Queen Victoria it was a time of great change there were many different types of literary works being put out there and we're going to take a look at some of those now this is a survey course which means that we're going to be taking a brief look at a lot of different type of literature we don't really have the time to dig deeply into each one this is designed to show you what's out there so that next year you'll have the opportunity to pick a specialty in literature so in this video I'm going to tell you a little bit about what I expect from you what you'll be doing in this class and some of the content that will be learning so let's start with the objectives objective number one students will be able to read and understand a variety of literature I've already covered that you need to be able to do the reading you need to be able to understand the reading and eventually you're going to need to be able to apply it number two is important you're not only going to be wanting to look at the literature but you're going to need to connect what is going on in the works of literature with what is going on in the world at the time how does the Black Plague of the 1600s affect what Shakespeare is writing how does it affect the way plays are viewed how does the society in the 1900s affect the way that people view morals and rules and regulation the Victorian era you're going to need to be able to answer these questions and hopefully you'll think about our own time period how does our culture affect what we do and listen to you're going to need to be able to look at works in a little more depth objective 3 looking at things like tone language style theme these are tasks which you've covered in high school and you've already covered in various literature one but I'm expecting them from you again in addition to that I'm going to expect you to be able to complete some projects including papers tests and group presentations and I'm going to be able to use research skills as well can you discern between a primary source a secondary source and whether a source is valid or not these are some other objectives I'm going to be looking for let's move on the major units of this course are take a look over here we have the Renaissance unit to start us off in the 1600s we have the restoration after the monarchy has left and returned we have the romantic time period and then finally we end with the Victorian time period so we have 3 R's and a V it sounds like some sort of vehicle well it isn't each of these units is very very different from each other and there is a great deal of going back and forth of changing and and then finally returning to wear one came from it'll make more sense as we go through it in the rest are and the Renaissance will be looking at works like Shakespeare in the restoration will be looking at pieces of satire of journals of people taking carefully detailed notes in the romantic time period will be looking primarily at poetry and all of the different poets around at the time and then in the Victorian era we'll be looking at a play the importance of being earnest and I'm also going to expect you to find some of your own choices during the time so what are the major projects well for the first unit I'm going to have you work on a group project with Macbeth you're going to do an interview of one of the characters in addition they'll be an exam for the restoration period you're going to have to do a project on satire you're going to have to show you understand satire by making a satire presentation for the world today you'll be working in groups for this for the romantic poetry period you are going to be teaching the class I'll do a demo and then after that you're going to be responsible for researching a poet and telling the class all about him or her and breaking a poem down for us the final piece will the literary analysis paper in that you're going to have to select a book from a list you can have to read it become an expert on it and make an argument about it so it's going to bring all of these things together these are the major things you'll be graded on in addition to that I have some expectations for you number one you need to keep up with the readings this course is all about reading if you are not reading then you have nothing to offer in our class discussions a typical class will involve showing up asking if there are any questions and then we will spend about an hour talking about whatever literature is due that day after that there'll be a break and we'll have some time to work on the projects but if you don't come to class having read well there's really little reason to come to class regular attendance is key if you miss out yes you can catch up on the reading but you're going to miss vital discussion which really can never be made up you will be required to do blackboard posts on certain selections and you need to make sure you're keeping up with those and your participation in class needs to be on par with everyone else I don't like to say oh you need to participate once or twice or three times it really all depends on how much everyone else participates maybe you're having a bad day maybe you're having a great day hopefully in the end though it will balance out and you'll be a solid member and able to participate I trust you will let's talk a little bit about something that's actually rather serious plagiarism all I can say is don't do it plagiarism is when you take anything that you didn't come up with an idea a sentence a book and you try to pass it off as your own it's really simple to avoid all you have to do is say where you found the information you'll be amazed at how many people still make this mistake remember paraphrasing is a major concern a lot of people think if they change the wording it becomes their own but it doesn't be sure that you look in the syllabus and read over the academic integrity policy it will tell you the difference between plagiarism and using different sources appropriately so that's a brief introduction to the course my name is mr. Harold pretty much all content can be found either on the blackboard site or my website mr. Harold calm if you ever have any questions it's usually best to check there you can probably answer them for yourself before you have to contact me if you're still stuck maybe I made a mistake who knows you can always email me at Daniel Harold at me calm my phone number is available on the syllabus as is my other contact information including the office hours etc but the email is probably the fastest way to get in touch with me I tend to check at every couple minutes at least on my phone though you never know a final note I've often heard this expression asked three before you ask me I am more than happy to help with your questions and get you started in the right direction but a lot of the times you can solve the problem on your own just by asking other people so before you send me an email try to ask each other in fact you may find that other people have different takes on it something I haven't thought of before so that survey of British literature to I look forward to having you in class this year will see you all coming up on our first session on Monday thanks for stopping by have a great day senior high school capstone projects cheap Gallatin School of Individualized Study.
