Write for me capstone security analysis jobs capstone mortgage ma for money yamaha yama movie review greatandhra reviews I we're actually a part of a program called emergence scholars that just started this year and so my position in that program is to be a study advocate for the new first years coming in who live on the first floor of st. Mary's I am a study advocate right here in the st. Mary's first floor for the emerging scholars and what I do is I basically provide academic help and alongside with my mentor we get together and we come up with strategies and resources and worksheets to help the students achieve academic success we needed to be mentors as it were to the new study applicants and and as I was explaining as a new initiative we were almost developing it from scratch the principle being that we wanted to support the students academically and socially so my mentoring is Dementor these wonderful study advocates through the academic arm there is a comment or Beth steffans and she's not with us today but she did all this social input and support we held office hours in the office that we have in st. Mary's so it's not too far away from the students and so they're able to you know come visit us whenever they have questions about anything relief to have questions about the O'Neill center or anything of that sort and in addition to that we made sure to choose hours that were the students are most available so a lot of my hours were the evening so that you know students are not in classes there in the dorm so they'll be able to come or over the weekends if they do have any questions over the weekends as well we met every two weeks throughout last semester never two weeks training you know developing what are the elements of the program what's our role how can we attract student and we know develop test taking note taking all kinds of study skills that we considered essential to share with students so I'm always cited about that it has provided me a lot of skills and like such as critical thinking skills that i can use after graduation as well as i can use like in grad school or even in my classes now so that has been wonderful and as someone who wants to become a social worker that one-to-one contact that I've had with the students has been immensely helpful and now I have a little more comfort of how to work with students of different backgrounds oh it has impacted me personally in terms of getting out of my comfort zone especially when it comes to teaching learning how to work with different kinds of learning styles and different kinds of strategies with the students here on the floor and coming up with ways that work for some people and then finding other ways that don't necessarily work with some other kids so finding that balance in between what works for some students and what doesn't and how can we come up with creative ways to help all the students a mentor not only gives but receives quite a lot and sometimes even more it's it's exhilarating to talk with it and work with this study advocates and see their own enthusiasm and see their own creativity in using the ideas that I share and of course it's important that we create an impact for the students coming in and the new center is all about that kind of impact so this is just another way that we are able to reach out so I think it has benefited me greatly well I think it impacts the st. Kate's community because it's an extra resource on top of all the resources that they get here and it's like there is someone out there willing to help you and I think that's pretty important that even though I get paid to do this and things like that but out of all that equation it's like here's one more person that is willing to help you which is very great and not everyone has that one on one attention with the new students who are coming in a lot of them are at risk and so having that social support and that mentor for them helps them to be acclimated to the school to use the resources wisely so then the resources available on campus are being used by these students and so it kind of gives back to say in case because their students are going to be doing better because of the resources there is they receive through the program and they're better off as they go into their second third and fourth years so we at San cade's do quite a lot to support incoming students and so this is just another initiative in that direction particularly obviously supporting those who may otherwise be considered under prepared or first generational students students who have a lot to offer and a great deal of potential but who could flounder without necessary support so it helps the universe in terms of its retention in terms of its mission fulfilling them its mission for all students a mentor it's actually an older or more experienced person mentoring the novice here I would operate as a mentor for e Khram and and Laura and they are in turn going to turn and be mentors for students who are there roughly the same age of the difference is that we're all a little further along the journey than those coming in so we are able to do say relax we have done this before you can do it too and that's a banana mantra together we can do this so that's what we're doing sharing with them what has worked to enable us to succeed and I think I think it's a good good system it works really in addition to that having a mentor has helped me a lot in my own confidence because when you have that mentor you know that you have that person who supports you and so you're more likely to go out there and do things when you have a mentor you can use them as a reference point you know if you're applying for something you know that you have a mentor that you can ask for a recommendation and things like that and so having a mentor has just helped me a lot and growing and also learning how to ask for help when I need it and that's what has helped me succeed as a student myself and I'm hoping to provide that same support for the students that I'm mentoring there are many different obstacles at me and akram have encountered and if it wasn't for mentors we would be completely lost so it's definitely important especially when it's something as new is this I think my advice would be to be open to working with a group of people because with the emerging scholars program it's not that we just work with students but we have the emerging scholars committee that we work with so you have to be open-minded they have to be able to work with your mentors your committee members as well as the students and when it comes to the working with the students you have to be open-minded and learning how to work with students of different backgrounds because all students are going to have different comfort levels and some students might need more support than another student might so just being able to be aware of that and adapting to it would help dice it an immensely don't be scared of what the end program is I know there's a lot of details and things that come up especially in the first meeting but over the course of time it's really really helpful and all the workshops are extremely extremely helpful even if it doesn't necessarily apply to your line of work but it will in some way shape or form things like time management even though we've heard it so many times just that workshop that they had was extremely important we're looking for folks who are competent but who have a willingness to share their their their knowledge and their talents you know a willingness to share maybe you could say a sense of compassion too so it's been wonderful working with a grown man and Laura and we look for somebody else who is just willing to say yes I've done it I want to you know share with others so that's what we look for and our mantra now is how can we make sure that we make a difference in the lives of of the emerging scholars sports capstone ideas State University of New York at Cortland.
