the first lady holds an undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management please help me welcome tonight's commencement speaker first lady Lauren Baker good evening everybody good evening everybody thank you so much for welcoming me to address the class of 2016 this is so cool and i have to say nathaniel yeah i'm so bummed i have to follow you he totally set the bar way too high so bear with me this is a huge honor and true confessions I've been to three of my own graduations high school college and business school I don't remember who spoke at my high school or my college graduation and General Motors CEO Roger Smith spoke at my business school graduation no idea what he said so I recognize that tonight I have a really high bar to clear and that I'm one of the only thing standing between you and your diploma so I promise I'll be very brief right so just let me offer a couple of thoughts about you you're the honorees today I've read about some of you I've talked to President Gentilly about the class of 2016 and I see something truly remarkable among you perseverance I think perseverance matters you hear a lot about Millennials and many of you will fit into that generation Millennials are known for needing to be celebrated for everything you do for expecting instant gratification and moving on you don't get it you're a product of the age of technology and parents like me who tell you can be anything you want to be we're right by the way Millennials don't always get a good rep but I want to argue that this class from North Shore community college is not typical anything but right you deserve that you all have faced so many challenges to earn your degree eighty-two percent of you have balanced work family and your college course load you struggled you been knocked down by maybe circumstance or hard times or life but what sets you apart is that each of you persevered you stuck it out you figured it out you try it again and you found success but it wasn't easy we all know that and you know now that you have what it takes to succeed and achieve your goals no matter what they are the class of 2016 is filled with people who persevere you all are the ones who after a long hard day at work when what you really want to do is park yourself in front of games of Thrones and eat an entire bag of chips you don't you got up you went to class you wrote the paper you studied for that test you got it done I learned that one student from this class hit a roadblock in his education when he couldn't get financial aid until his green car came through he didn't give up he made a new plan he worked three jobs he took English language and college prep courses he tried again he's graduating today and he's heading off to me to complete and you know what he's gonna complete his nursing degree and that's pretty awesome another student deferred her education until her children were grown then she overcame a learning disability to succeed in the classroom and today she starts the next chapter of her education in communication in theater arts at Salem State she's shot you all know that to achieve your goals you're gonna have to work hard and it is not going to go your way every time but you shouldn't as Nathaniel said you shouldn't be afraid afraid to fail anybody who does anything that matters fails at some point along the way think about Thomas Edison and the invention of the light bulb he said that he didn't fail in inventing the light bulb he just found 10,000 ways not to make a light bulb well my husband Charlie ran for governor in 2010 and it was the first time we ever ran for any kind of public office it was hard it was interesting it was terrifying and we put everything we had into that race and we lost and I'm not going to lie it stunk it really stunk but hindsight is 2020 and I realize now that if we hadn't run and lost we wouldn't we would have thought we did everything right and we never would have learned some very valuable lessons so we took those lessons to heart we tried again and we won in 2014 thank don't get me wrong it was really grueling the second time too but it wasn't that terrifying because we knew we had what it took to put the plan in place put everything we had into it and do it again we were willing to persevere many of you sixty-five percent in fact are the first person in your family to graduate from college and even if you aren't the first in your family today you add yourself to that list I was at a commencement last year and I got to congratulate a young man that I met well he was a student and when i went up to congratulate him he introduced me to his 13 year old brother and he said this is my little brother he's way smarter than me and he is definitely going to college because that's what we do in my family we go to college so this man persevered and he completed his education he changed the trajectory not only of his own life but of the life of his entire family forever think about that you're doing the same thing your education is so important it's going to open doors for you and more importantly I think it showed you that you can open your own doors right but right you can I want to make sure the that just one last thought all this like nose to the grind nose to the grindstone work hard stuff it is really really important but you need to know that it's important for you to have fun sometimes too in fact it's critical so as you write this next chapter of your life and every chapter after that spend some time and think about what you're good at what are you passionate about figure that out and work it into your daily life find out what gives you joy and do a whole lot more of it for me that means you know in addition to laughing with my husband and my kids I get true joy out of helping people and I know that sounds so completely totally sappy but it's really true so so I've always been in the service business and I spend lots of time working with nonprofits and individuals trying to solve problems to help make life better for other people that makes me really happy and it has this great benefit of making other people happy too so class of 2016 you have so much to offer you've persevered in the face of challenges of all kinds you've already succeeded in so many ways the opportunities are all around you go take them and now it's up to you to show the others who follow in your footsteps just how it's done I am so proud of you we are all so proud of you go out there keep up the good work and don't forget to have a little fun now and then congratulations class of 2016 let's take a picture right here mrs. Baker thank you so much for your inspiring words capstone nursing school alabama university for money State University of New York.
