we've brought Brad ball into the studio today for this edition of purple prize welcome to purple pride I'm Thomas Church this is Brad Mall Brad thanks for coming today Thank You Thomas how come few people know about our film department because you have not been here yet that's true now that you're here everyone will know that's why we had to here today now my producer tells me Brad that you used to be on ABC's General Hospital for a little while 20 years 22 years yeah really what did you do I was a doctor were you was a neurosurgeon you played one on TV yes yes I was actually a neurologist but then a script change one day I became a neurosurgeon and how does that happen well it's just a couple of words the rolla gist a neurosurgeon and poof you were there real done a lot of training cool I just have to read the D word very nice so yes over the years I I've always maintained whatever you do best on a show right like if you're a tremendous young handsome person you spend a lot of time in bed very good because I'm good at it yep that's been a great enormous time as a as a victim of gunshot wounds because I was really good at apparently really you got how many times did you get shot did you keep track well not really but I mean I can tell you I was shot in the head in the heart paralyzed comatose impotent blind at four brain surgeries Wow I get another plate in my head I'll have a set and so it but surviving all of that has made you the person you are today surviving the producer says maybe a head injury is nothing compared to a new producer now you gave a couple of autographs before we started the show yeah do you ever do those autograph signings like baseball players do you know yeah I've 10 bucks a pop something like that to generate a little yeah I used to I used to when I was on the show I did about 30 appearances a year did you really yeah all right now my so I need to ask you though you graduate I know I am um have where you graduated from SFA yes right here yes in 1917 okay and and that because of this you ended up in General Hospital in New York and because of the fabulous training you're just built the stone fort I believe when I was here it was a pretty swanky building Wow just joking but no I went from here I actually did summer stock in the summers at Casa manana and Fort Worth right so I was a theater major and an English minor and I was already on my road to show business in the summer times between because I believe that you kids need to get out there and do it right now yeah and then the very that actually the night after my show ended you know I graduated then the summer at Casa manana doing plays I drove to Los Angeles with a car and six hundred dollars in my pocket and and just said you know Here I am in Los Angeles with who cares and I had $11 left when I got my first job there it was back on the farm can the same be said for your return then to Nacogdoches with $11 a my similar experience in quiet really it's a my I mean there's several rationalizations about it but basically once you get off of a show I went from General Hospital to seventh heaven in the final years of my television life and once you've been associated with a soap opera for 22 years you pretty much are that character about anybody casting in television so I thought I'm off of that now I've asked him to kill me off because they were sort of not using me very much and as long as your character exists then you're on TV partially and you'll never be thought of as anything else right so I asked him to kill me off and they very graciously obliged me and don't be off with a monkey virus and yeah don't sleep with monkeys and remember that and so I decided that I needed to disappear for a few years to recreate myself and Nacogdoches has provided you with that opportunity Nacogdoches has not only done that it's been the biggest singing of my life it's amazing yes I I mean I honestly thought I was just coming to Texas to retire and vacation and and you know rest and I don't know restore my soul or something and it was all true and more very nice we now have you at the University as a result of all this yeah I teach you teach things speech film and acting for the camera yeah and it's basically the same thing I always did yeah except a little more technical gangster bill arscott right but it's tremendously fun it's a very rewarding we love having out can you give us the brief history of the sfa film program no okay then we'll no no I mean I can bill our Scott dr. bill R Scott single-handedly and created the film department yeah and this was back during the days actually it was after I had left college but he went out and and got film cameras sixteen eight millimeter and 35 millimeter cameras and E and and just I mean carved it out of the stone of a school that that had no knowledge of what filmmaking was about and I mean he bought his own lights he he fixes his own cords I mean he created this department and you have to understand you know in Hollywood you have thousands of people that write the scripts and edit the scripts and and like the set and things like this this is a one-man organization well.talk children to men organization now with your presence well you know I'm very much of a johnny-come-lately the film departments very well established we do a feature film every year now the kids are and they're not kids these young people are tremendous professionals and our Scott has one of the most amazing rates would they have done Studies on it and he has a 98% employment rate when his kids leave the class they maybe grips they may be best boys are they may be actors now but but he has a tremendous ability to get people jobs so tell me about the fall what's coming up the typical program right if those in stood in the program what do they do in the fall well you you get in our program and first of all have to take 212 which is it's just an introduction to all of it and it's actually a great fun class you get in there with with other people with similar likes about film and you make three movies over the course of the semester in your little groups and one one is black and white with the color stripped out of it the next one's color without sound and then finally we have sound and color and everything of the third one that gives you the basics and then you go into four twelve which is very very difficult for twelve will move us into the spring semester right right well four twelve is where we study not only the technical aspects of filmmaking but we also each student writes a script and then the students all vote on the scripts as the fall semester concludes and out of that come spring and then we shoot from the students selected films vignettes little tiny miniature films every Friday in fact if any of you wonder why you see film people all over the campus already it's because we're shooting movies and then starting in the summer session in 20 days we shoot a feature film and then we spend the next year doing the same thing we did last year however we're also editing and scoring with the music department a brand new film do my conference on artificial intelligence and law Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology, East Elmhurst, Queens.
