Researchable topics in biology education

Researchable topics in biology education do my outline for capstone project business 02 contact ´╗┐if there is one thing that can be said about the place we call British Columbia it has always been diverse for thousands of years we have had seven completely different First Nation language groups sharing the area and if you think about how amazing that is you think Europe from we have basically three language groups you've got the indo-european anything from english to hindi is all in the same language group you've got the finish in the hungarians a different language group and the Basques are all out there by themselves that's all of Europe there's three in our area that we call home seven different completely different language groups in the first half of the 1800s the main language of British Columbia for the non-native newcomers was French and their leadership all intermarried with native people the native based Chinook wahwah was spoken from Alaska to California the founder of British Columbia was a black man named James Douglas one quarter black our next speaker tries to understand the next phase of our history which was not so multicultural he's highly sought after by the most prestigious universities in the United States but he has chosen to return here to help himself and others understand where we come from and where this knowledge might lead us please welcome professor andreu thank you Sam a couple weeks ago I was doing something I haven't done since I was 18 years old which was to actually pull an all-nighter and stay up all night I'm 46 i was born in 1967 100th year anniversary of canada i'm too old to these kind of things but what happened was I was putting my kids to bed and I got a text from Terry hooey he said hey well how long do you stay up at night I kind of went well you know sometimes i go to bed midnight i have a lot of work to do one two in the morning so let's talk and so I went over and we talked from midnight to 5am in the morning it's the first time since I was a teenager that I've driven home with the Sun rising what were we talking about we were talking about this place what what are we here who are we where are we for me the idea I'd like you to think about for the next six minutes is the idea of Pacific Canada not Western Canada not be seen on not even just Vancouver but Pacific Canada what does that mean what it means to me is it this place is unique because it's the place where you have trans-pacific migrants transatlantic migrants all coming over the last two hundred and fifty or so years and they're intermingling with each other but also with Aboriginal peoples because this is still in British Columbia ninety-eight percent unseeded territory of aboriginal peoples of the First Nations and Vancouver itself is unique because it system remarkably diverse place we have people from all around the world but what's really unique is that we are coming across the Pacific across the Atlantic on Aboriginal land so how does this change the way we think of ourselves who are we if this is where we are I teach at UBC we are on must scream land the traditional territory of Coast Salish people's that means that there's not a minute that goes by which we can think of our history and who we are without remembering that we are guests on someone else's land that if you think this place belongs to you I'm fourth generation if I make that claim that I've been here longer than someone who's only first-generation then what we reiterate and repeat is this sense of taking away from the people who were here before us so even though I'm fourth generation and my great-grandfather came during the time of the building of the railroads when Canada was created I still am a guest on someone else's lat and when you go to someone else's house you bring some gift or you you you make an offering or you pay the respect that you're in someone else's house but we don't remember that often because if you're born here this place must be mine or if we come from some other place this place is mine it's not so if it's in the Canada first and foremost is a place that has people coming from all around the world including the Chinese the reason that about the Chinese built the railroad was because they were already here they got here before the vast majority of people who took the railroad to get here got him remember that when you when someone says why did the Chinese built the rail it's not because they were cheaper as I guess they undercut the labor that was already here they were here before European labors so one of the things we want to do as teachers and education so I a group of us we created a video game an immersive video game called gold mountain quest and what it was was an attempt to create for 10 year olds an immersive game which they could just play for 45 minutes where that town is the way it as she was in 1910 1911 there were Chinese there were First Nations there were migrants that had come originally from Europe and the player is the son or the daughter depends on how they self-identify and of the local Chinese store owner because her mother is Aboriginal we don't make a big deal out of it it's just normal that's just the way it was and so as they play this game and they gather things by the way a ten-year-old 12 wats the last time that boys will only gather and play the same kind of game as girls they want to blow things up once they're 13 or 14 or they want to shoot people that's what the game designers told us but this game was a way of actually actualizing to use that bird Pacific Canada this meeting ground of people who just played with each other worked with each other now there were some nasty dark moments we know those moments we know that there was a long history of white supremacy of anti-asian exclusion of residential schools of reserve system my grandfather could not vote until nineteen forty seven if you were Aboriginal you couldn't vote until nineteen sixty but that's an aberrational period we are actually returning to a time to a place which was much more similar to the time that Sam mentioned when James Douglas and the early migrants who came here lived in which is Pacific Canada a place where actually together in our diversity we create something that we cannot do in our particular parochial individual perspectives together we can create something that is unique and that's what I would inspire we hope you to think about how in this place wherever you've come from and maybe you were born here like I was but how in this place can we not just get along but create in our diversity in our differences in an open transparent collaborative way a society that makes decisions that are not just self-interested according to one groups needs or another groups needs that doesn't forget its past it doesn't forget that we're guests on someone else's land it doesn't forget that there was racism but it's not blinded by our past it's not obsessed with our past I'm a historian but I hated his 312 and I would never would win a story if that was our history we need to create a new history a history that's common to all the people who are here history doesn't exclude any particular people without a common past we have no common future and so I would urge you all to think who are we where are we what are we do my the capstone course Baruch College, Gramercy Park.
