Kapstone paper longview wa home page howard capstone program personal mission statement job application oh hello everyone welcome to another episode and I apologize for the light conditions here it's around 5 a.m. right now but real quick I just want to do a quick introduction here about the neutral safety switch sometimes also called the inhibitor switch on automatic transmission models and this video really is a step-by-step tutorial showing how to find and replace the neutral safety switch I did not have enough time to shoot on how you could diagnose this is indeed your problem on your car I will have something up within a week or two just showing how you can test various sensors on your car and use a multimeter through volt in ohms but when I get to that you can take a look at that and you can really pinpoint different things on your car so again this video really just say step by step you're fairly certain this is your problem and hopefully you can learn from it that being said let's go ahead let's get to it and any questions of course leave them below and we'll go from there okay first step is we need to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery you have these four clips around the air filter box just go ahead and you have a last one right here go ahead unclip it disconnect the mass air flow sensor give a little connector here go ahead remove this you also have two clamps you need to remove right here remove those two hoses right down here just back this off a couple of times and then we can remove the whole assembly out of the way so once the air box is out of the way here you have this plastic tubing which comes up to the front what you need to do is remove these two tabs and also you have these sensor just press down the tab and there you go but before you remove this really have to take out this air box and these are ten millimeter bolts okay once you wrap that up just go ahead remove this air box just make sure you don't get it snagged on any wires and then again we need to remove this plastic housing and before we do that yeah these clips up here really really don't worry if you damage the you can get replacements and flips at the auto parts store even up goes one even Lowe's and Home Depot carry these you can get a bunch of them really cheap I have a bunch of them actually here move it like so and then once you have these clips removed you have a sensor right here just make sure this is a ten millimeter you now here I'm removing the battery from the vehicle really this could be the first step when you start the job I'm just having a small software issue so it's easier for me showing the the battery removal at this point but regardless just go ahead remove the battery from the vehicle then you can move on to the next step okay so the airbox is out of the way the battery is no longer here the next step that we need to do is remove the battery tray and there's also one screw over here in the corner sort of hiding and right there okay so those three bolts are removed we have one more holding on this relay box that is a 10 millimeter remove that guy and then you have these little clips just make sure you look out for these guys one right there and a second one right there so you need to remove those two clips and the Box should come out you okay so that bolt is removed again you have these little clips which one is right here just pull it out of the way give another one right there again just yank it or even use a little pair of pliers and there you go that's out of the way and always look around the battery box before you remove it for example as you can see let me turn on a light here it's a little dark take a look at the side you see how you have this cable running through and a hooks on the end of the box I'm not sure if you can see that you see how it hooks through we want to do is make sure you remove this cable because otherwise the box won't be able to be removed so just always look around because sometimes they always hide these things and again I can see at the end here again for looking up toward the end so how it has this box shaped nut I know underneath there there's a rubber grommet and we should be able to pull toward the vehicle the front of the vehicle this way and should come out let's see if I see this to see our camera so here's this fuse relay box and you see I just um unclip there and then should be able to remove this from the vehicle there we go so we have the battery box removed and I know by looking at the factory repair manual the neutral safety switches underneath this box and before you do this job look at your vehicle's repair manual a Haynes repair manual or a Chilton anything like that repair manuals so you can find out exactly where the neutral safety switch is before you do the job just makes the job a lot easier and more streamlined so that being said we need to remove this box and it looks like probably has one of these grommets most likely it is on the bottom and I know it's tough to see but right there there's a nut we can either remove that or we can slide it off of the mount and we'll be able to remove this box okay so I chose to remove that 10 millimeter bolt I had to do it off camera it was a little too difficult to video but regardless you know where it is so once you remove that bolt this comes right out he's moving out of the way and once that box is out of the way this is where the sense is located let me get a better view or a better view for you guys okay so looking from the front of the vehicle you have this easy way to find it look for this thick transmission cable this runs from the vehicle down to the sensor itself and it's attached by one nut as you can see right here so we need to remove that and then we can go ahead and here's the sensor itself we need to remove the sensor looks like there are a couple small nuts there's one right there there's another one right there and it should be able to come off quite easily so this is the sensor essentially and as you put the car in park at night this lever right here moves so it needs to be in this position but sometimes even though the car isn't parked right now the sensor thinks it's not in park and you won't be able to start the car so that's when you need to replace this so that being said let's go ahead first step is to remove this nut then we can go ahead and remove the sensor from the vehicle and this is a twelve millimeter nut by the way you and then this should slip right off that's it okay so we have the shift cable removed now we have these a few little nuts holding on the sensor 10 these are 8 millimeter nuts by the way that is the first one and then there's a second one it's not too easy to get on video but toward the bottom of the sensor okay in fact the bottom of the sensor has two small 8-millimeter not so make sure you remove both of them okay so here's your sensor and if you follow the wire let me just turn on a light here you follow the wire and the wire leads these two connectors so you need to remove both of these connectors once you have your new sensor go ahead hook up the electrical connection here down there nice and tight okay moment of truth go ahead that's it we're in good shape alright guys so not really a difficult job hopefully this helps some of you out there any questions concerns just leave them below if anyone out there wants to see a repair video just leave it below and that being said we'll see you next time write for me experience project Manhattan
