Houses for sale capstone road do my capstone fitness instagram tcnj essay question [Music] hi I'm Shannon and I'm a couch surfer right now I'm saying my dad placed or this week I got lucky and I'm hosting my car has become my closet because I never really know where I'm going to be so you may be thinking shouldn't I have it figured out by now I have a good job I save some cash well I thought I was doing all right I rented a place in this new building in January 2016 it wasn't easy but average 14 and Spadina well then I got my lease renewal my rent buy rocketed 950 dollars a month in 1652 2600 I thought there's no way what about rent control this is me talking to the Landlord and Tenant course they increased my rent a thousand dollars a month if you're in Charlotte even still on the lakeshore like you know fergie over your condos downtown College Bay anything that's been built in the last 25 years hey cuz we were your scripts renting in Toronto has become bananas there are few rental thing built the demand is big so I had to move out and now I coaster I know I'm not the only one wrestling with it I'm asking you to share your stories and let me taste them to the decision-makers an ad you will be able to afford to live in our city is there a solution I want to say I love this place the response is overwhelming we ask people to reach me directly and you have I received easily close to 200 emails one mom told me this morning she read the story over coffee she said her rent is the same as her day care cost she says she finds it hard to breathe others told me about making the choice to move to Bari and can use one young man that he left and went to Montreal all together where he could afford to rent a joint that's really one of the big questions we want to ask what's the implication for our city is smart young people are being forced to leave leave that's not like you're a young urban professional good at your job lots of people know you in the city and you're going through this how many other people out there like you are there we're going to find out you saw the forum - on Facebook for people to connect and talk about the right and I do want to make this clear with my story we're just scratching the surface we'll talk about me today but it's really about everyone else because as I mentioned in the article what keeps me up at night is thinking about people working two or three jobs single parents students what are you guys doing to get by so yes we started this Facebook group I'd love for you to check it out and so you can discuss your renting experiences we're trying to get answers and find solutions so share your struggles but also your successes you can just search Toronto renting bows on CBC Toronto's Facebook page and join the conversation there I'm looking for a place as a March 1st that I've been looking for over a month and no luck so far I live with my parents right now I work a minimum wage job and I'm a student right now so everything is way out of my price point with taxes being high and food going up clothing going up it's expensive to live I'm saying trunk is where I works is where I've got my career but if the price to keep skyrocketing on oil do we are calling this series no fixed address and Shannon Martin is leading it for us she's back with us now along with mehar shad for who works with the Advocacy Center for Kenneth Ontario she's been following the rental market closely for years now recently spent months trying to find an affordable rental no but how are we gonna start with you tell us about your search you should be an expert yeah well it actually took me four months to find a place and I was lucky to actually have family and friends to help me out while I was looking but it was honestly one of the hardest you know endeavors I've taken how can you work with tenants they come to you with their stories what are you hearing at your advocacy group about this um well the vacancy rate in Toronto is really low and so a lot of people are just kind of desperate to find a place that they can afford and I think affordability is the main problem here a lot of people are spending more than 50% of their income on housing and a lot of people that are are low income folks whether they're students seniors people on OWR ODSP they are really finding it difficult to not only find a place but they're trying to hold on to their current rental units and there's a lot of evictions that are happening in the city and so at the object center for tenants Ontario what we do is we try to stop those addictions because we know once you're out of that unit particular to learn exactly and you're being displaced right and people sure you're we want to bring you into the conversation too you've been hearing from people online about this pretty much all day from you put your story out there this morning right my story was focusing on the condo apartment so the newer build and but we also know people are seeing rent increases much higher than it set out by the province in older buildings and so we heard from Alison B and she said my husband and I are both educators were in our early 30s we find housing frustrating they make an income of close to a hundred thousand dollars but they finding a house is incredibly hard they were spending eighteen hundred dollars a month that they were living in a place that was falling apart they were having battles with landlords so this is really touches on something that you guys encounter as well it's not just the we're buildings that are seeing rent increases is older sometimes it is and that's so part of the so there are two sets of tenant costs of tenants in Ontario so those that are protected fully protected by the rent guidelines and then there are those that are not protected which is that they fall under the 1991 exemption so which is basically talk about it or what your organization is doing work around that exactly so this is a top priority for us in the past 15 years every time we have met with the minister of housing we have brought this up and basically what it is is a strength regulation it does not apply to any building that was occupied after November 1st 1991 and so the you know the rent can increase at any price after the end of lease or there could be no cause evictions for those tenants and just in case people missed your story that happened to you Shannon and it was $1000 basically different after the time was up right it was a huge increase and I do feel like my story is extreme but we've certainly been hearing from people 20 30 percent and if you're already paying your max you're already paying 50 to 60 percent of your income you can't handle 20 or 30 percent even lahar let's talk about what tenants can do if there's anything you this for to protect themselves well currents should think more politically than they do today right so whether its voting for someone a politician that they can look at their track record in terms of affordable housing or just organizing in their building speaking to people and their neighbors and really bringing their collective voice together to ask their politicians to invest in affordable housing and their city thank you for talking to us Mahara you know we see all these buildings going up we see all these got we're thinking we're building more capacity for renters but obviously not because the people can't afford them even though we see these glass towers all over a city Shannon thank you for starting this conversation today we're going to keep it going of course we've created a Facebook group a place for you to discuss your renting experiences where trying to get answers and also hopefully find some solutions just search Toronto renting rose - CDC Toronto on Facebook and watch for much more next week and throughout this week - from Shannon thank you ladies do my senior capstone project logo
