Do my excel capstone project 1 mountain images write for me proposal for capstone biology 7 4 homeostasis and cells ´╗┐so we're gonna play some audio before I begin if you know what this is you can move your body left and right thank you you can turn it off thank you on September 30th 2016 nearly a year ago American singer and songwriter Solange released her third studio album a seat at the table now I'm gonna be honest with y'all I'm from Houston and Beyonce has been on fire since day one you know what I'm saying but Solange I was like hold up hold up I remember looking at the album cover saying a seat at the table what is what table a see what is she talking about and then I press play and my life changed now coming from the same community as both Beyonce and Solange I was used to gangsta rap what we called the hood right and so listening to artists like Solange was out of the ordinary but as I closed my eyes and I started to listen I begin to vibe and connect to the rhythms and beats that I was hearing I started to think about the interludes and I started to repeat and replace some of the audio that her parents and her community members that I knew personally were starting to bring up I instantly started to think about a famous quote from James Baldwin to be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious you had a rage almost all the time I started to finally reach a level of self where I could embrace parts of my blackness that I was hiding when I got to places like NYU I was able to embrace my identity and my authenticity and it all started in a community that both Solange and I both came from see as a little light-skinned black boy growing up in Houston Texas I struggled finding my seat at the table I didn't know what side to go on I had my mother side of the family party Harty Christmases and I had my father's side of the family so food smothered fried everything I'm getting excited thinking about it and we always held block parties now Douglas Park and third warders were hundreds and hundreds of people would gather I'm talking generations after generations together you would see great grandmothers and toddlers sharing the same tables block parties were significant in my community because they were able to bring people from all backgrounds together gangsters were able to connect with church members old folk with young and then that was me my mother would drop me off and we'd have these big loud parties people would bring food blast music on the courtyard and of course I would hit the dance floor I'm talking I would be moving my body up and down not caring what anybody thinks I'd have people in the background saying got a little Robert I hear you there you go oh that boy is on fire yeah but I was on fire because I didn't care what people thought of me I was confident because my cousin's would call me white boy and I had to get some skin some thick skin and my mother would say my aunt put it this way if you gonna come to the block party you better bring some but if you can't cook don't embarrass yourself so there would be internal dialogues of all my family sharing things like well if I burnt the fried chicken last time I'm not gonna bring the fried chicken this time i'ma bring the napkins or you'd hear people say things like well I know how to barbecue so I'm gonna bring some meat and that was his contribution or you'd hear well you never find me in the kitchen so I'll bring the Jews but everyone is able to contribute to the block party and this concept of contribution is what really kept me at my core but as I've struggled with finding a place or a seat at a table I realized that it starts with first identifying what I can offer you know I didn't realize what that meant when I got to NYU I was a first-generation college student coming from a low-income background and in high school I did all that I could to force myself at tables I begin to identify what are my passions what are my strengths what are some things that I can separate myself from everyone else I didn't really have positive role models in my life I lost my father when I was five to gun violence and lost my grandfather to cancer shortly after I was reading things like the letters from a Birmingham jail and the autobiography of malcolm x i was in search constant search of finding a seat that I could call mine and then I realized in order for that to happen you have to embrace parts of you it meant that in order for me to be my best self I had to say well what am i passionate about what are what are my interests what separates me from everyone else I'm an individual there's what eighty eight point five million people in New York City what can I offer and I realized as soon as I was able to identify my base my passions my goals all the things that make me me people were starting to offer me tables and seats that I didn't even know existed one being the Disney dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and essence magazine I was a senior in high school and it was the first time I got on a plane with my mother we traveled to Walt Disney World and my dreams changed Steve Harvey emphasized the importance of pursuing your passion he said what are your passions and what are your gifts I was like I think I know what they are but I left thinking about what are the things that make me mean and I brought that too to my experience at NYU now when I got to end while you I realized it's great to be able to identify the things that make your seat but what if there's not a table for you do I have to make my own table I've started to think about things that I could do to build community of my own I organized an artist of color collective in my undergrad where we as artists would come together to create I launched an organization centered around possessing the Renaissance qualities for black and Latino men in New York City these were communities that I intentionally had to make because there weren't tables already set up for you so with this being centered around finding your seat at the table you have to think about what tables you want to be a part of what is the base of your seat what are your passions what are your goals how do you bring those things together to share with your community now I'll flash you back to August of 2012 when I first got to NYU I came all by myself like I said before I was a first-generation low-income college student and I had two suitcases one was filled with my entire community I had my mother all my uncles and cousins that were incarcerated all the people at the block party that had always dreamed about New York City baby bring me back something they were all them I left and on my right there were all the things that I was afraid of there were all the things that I felt I had to carry and take on but with me representing an entire community back in Houston I realized that it was more than just about me I realized that everything I said was not me speaking I had to represent people who couldn't be in this room and I started to pick up the motto I come as one I stand as 10,000 so as you think about finding your place at a place like NYU and finding your community it is important for you to be as honest as you possibly can similar to Solange's album a seat at the table in interlude masterpiece says if you don't understand my record you don't understand me you ain't meant to know what my experience is so sometimes it is okay to accept the fact that people some people aren't meant to understand you so whatever table you identify whether that's a table that's already established or a table that you make on your own it is important for you to embrace all the qualities that make up your seat so that you can be like Solange and be unforgettable thank you [Applause] do my capstone global solutions ag Sage Graduate Schools, Troy and Albany.
