Do my examples of capstone project proposals capstone project in word for money war in asia pacific slideshare presentations I can't believe it I'm just talking with Norman Rosenbaum right here it just seems inconceivable but 25 years ago probably one of the darkest periods in in New York City history we had the Crown Heights riots boy oh boy I never thought this would happen such chaos erupted in Brooklyn a violent race riots in the decades since two men who have lost loved ones and that violence formed an unlikely bond to Friendship helping to heal the community as Rosana just mentioned torn apart by racism I was there yesterday as they had that special reunion caramel Kato and professor Norman Rosenbaum haven't seen each other in five years but their bond goes back to August 1991 the Crown Heights riots in Brooklyn as a father I wanted to see things better kaito seven-year-old son Gavin was killed when a station wagon came onto the sidewalk and crashed into him while he was fixing his bike his seven-year-old cousin Angela also hit but survived the accident touched off three days of riots between August 19th and August 21st by mostly african-american residents angered that the driver of the station wagon was Jewish was in the ensuing melee that Rosenbaum 's brother Yankel was murdered an innocent man targeted only because he was Jewish my brother just didn't see Colin he didn't see differences he saw the commonality between everybody and when I think of the way and we have Norman Rosenbaum here with us this morning thank you so much for being here sorry about your loss does it seem inconceivable to you that it was 25 years ago oh it says if it was yesterday I mean we're reflecting back on what's happened in 25 years it's almost like everything's being fast-forward and condensed because yankles also very much with us in we think we think about him on a daily basis of my mother missoula day which goes by where we either don't talk about him or reflect about him or what he would have done how he would have reacted so very much out of our lives yesterday you with the Cato family we did ask mr. Cato to come in this morning it's an emotional time tomorrow would have been the day that his son was killed and so we totally understand why he wanted a little family time I it's a beautiful thing that you and the Cato family have this great relationship it says a lot about the community well I thought I said I've got to give full credit to Carmel he was on the 10th anniversary he reached out to our family at the end of an interview the journalist asked him - was there anything else the usual throwaway line and he has elected me thrones mold family and house will be at the time headed by Rudy Guiliani who was mayor and Rudy Washington deputy mayor and there was Isaac Abraham and senator Schwartz from the Jewish community put it all together I must say I was very very skeptical and cynical and I was totally wrong you could not find a more decent person that come al-qaeda he's really required ly spoken but a thinker no question about he it doesn't say a lot but what he says is focused and very very relevant when you look back on that and you were just in you've been back to the cities certainly a number of times you live in Australia right Australia your thoughts on Crown Heights now when you go back and just how much it has changed well I think there are two things the first thing is at the time there was a very popular narrative that somehow the violence erupted out of the tensions between the African American and Jewish segments of the crown arts community well that's not true it just isn't the people who rioted were not part of that integrated neighborhood but in fearless for the community they had the focus of the world literally put upon them they rose to the occasion they didn't get into an intellectual argument is it true isn't it true who was responsible responsible they took up the challenge and said well if you're going to focus on us we're gonna lead by example and there are so many initiatives where people can look back over 25 years from the youth to the old leave their middle life to the singleton employed the unemployed you name it they've worked together to really be a beacon of not only inspiration but a de treatment and for that they have to be complemented so I guess the city was trying to figure out what could they do to kind of commemorate the day and show that the things have gotten better in neighborhoods I believe the Brooklyn borough president came up with the idea of doing a festival this weekend what's your reaction is it something that you think is a good idea I think the again a couple of points have to be made any efforts and initiatives taken which improve community harmony improve and advance the understanding and respective ambition segments of the community of individuals is to be endorsed applauded and indeed promoted not a difficulty to celebrate it not a difficult feat not at this time the timing is terrible and I'm very old boys very concerned that whatever you do has to be honest one of the sad parts about the advertising for this festival is is no mention of my brother there's no mention of the riots the SS mention of a commemorative ceremony but doesn't like for what or for whom now if you want to really take advantage of all the achievements and hard work the initiatives I think you've got to be very very honest and focused about what the 19th of August 1991 going into the 23rd of August 1991 what those four days did from a historical point of view what the responses were and really gets what the community did in the 25 years I don't think anybody should confuse the achievements and the initiative because have been on all aspects of the community in a way there's a Caribbean American community the african-american community of the Jewish community often people sort of like to pigeonhole and it's not fair but there's been great advances but I think there's a timing forum I don't think the timing is now Norman just having spoke with you yesterday and getting a another sense of it you there's this lovely spirit that just seems to come from you and and you know talk with you gather your lovely man just can you tell us what is keeping you from being so you so grounded and just there's this peaceful quality was coming in you have every right to be upset with what happened to your brother is it your faith that's keeping you well I think there's again a number of contributing factors first thing I'll give credit to my parents I really have to they brought the ankle high up in a particular way and to respect people around you take people to define them don't worry about the coal desk you know their religion or whatever else second thing is the community that the people around you do have an influence on the way in which you respond you want to be treated or you want to be treated by them as you would treat them and I think the other thing which I'm very fortunate I've has a family who have kept me very focused and they will kept one another very focused throwing they're good friends and people's supporters and the supporters of God will emphasize this the people who have been with me not saying behind me but shoulder the shoulder with me and not just from the Jewish community I've been very very fortunate to have people from the african-american community the Latino can be a new name it I mean the gorgeous mosaic of New York is being with me and when you don't take a look at that it gives you personal reassures you faith in your thought human being and you can't help but be sensitive and appreciative of the decency denied decency of those around you well we thank you so much Chris for being on good day New York this morning and sharing your thoughts and perspective with us we appreciate it big troubles back home Norman Rosa Bravo all right good day's gonna be right back capstone and psych nursing Sisters of Charity of New York.
