I'm 24, I've studied in four different universities in the past two years, and I've taken some courses at Stanford. Except the courses I took at Stanford were a bit special. In fact, what happened is simply the courses at Stanford, in the classroom, on campus in America, were filmed and broadcast on the Internet, on YouTube, openly and freely for everyone. It's these courses that I took. And it goes even further. I don't know if you saw the front page of the Courrier International this month, "Harvard for all." What this talks about is a project called edX which is run by MIT and Harvard, who have put 30 million each to create an online learning platform which will be open and free for everyone. And they have a hugely ambitious goal: to use this platform to educate one billion people. So, what are these platforms? In academic jargon, it's called a MOOC. So, what's a MOOC? It's a class, as you can see, but these classes are massive. They are broadcast to hundreds of millions of people. On average, there are 100,000 students per class. These classes are open to everyone, anywhere, thanks to the Internet. They are online, on the Internet, accessible to everyone. So when I discovered that, about a year ago, I thought it was fantastic. I said to myself,"'Great, we'll reinvent education, break down the barriers, we'll end social discrimination of access to education. It'll be great." At the time, I was working for a startup, very technologically-oriented, a had done a year of business school, and I had had enough of water cooler conversations going over my head. I told myself, "Cool. I'm going to take an IT course." And knowing the risks of taking an IT course, I told myself I would go to the best university, to Stanford, to take this course. And that's what I did. That was a year ago, and unfortunately, today, I haven't finished the program yet. Because most of the time, I found myself like that. In fact, I realized, that I wasn't managing to learn from this kind of program. And I told myself, "This isn't normal." I was so motivated, I was ready to study in the evenings, the weekend, all day. I followed one of the best courses in the world in one of the best universities of the world, how was it possible that I wasn't able to learn? So I started thinking about it, about how I had learned prior to this experience, and how most people learned. To try and find the holes in this model, and why I hadn't been able to learn with it. The first thing I realized was that what I liked about learning when I was at university, was that: it was the ability to participate, to be active, to interact, to ask the teacher questions. But as well, to ask questions to my peers, the students studying with me. It's this ability to connect with people who want to learn, the same as us. Probably, what you remember most about university is the network you made for yourself, your future wife who you met, your mentor, your colleague, more than the diploma and the content of your classes. And that's what I didn't find online. That's why I started developing a project called Unishared, which is a collaborative note-taking platform. What does that mean? It means that when students go to class, they can take all their notes together, in real time, collaboratively, and that the class can be opened to anyone outside who's interested. And what does that create? Simply put, it creates interactions. It means that you can join the class and ask questions, interact, add to the discussion, bring your experience to the class. And you start to learn socially, all together. I realized, that at the end of the day, the web, the Internet, isn't a medium in the way TV is, where you can broadcast a video to 100, 000 people. No. The web is, precisely, a connection between all the links, all the connections of the network. It's Facebook that allows you to post your status to your friends. It's Twitter that allows you to say that you're here. It's Foursquare, etc. internet isn't the message broadcast to 100,000 people, on the contrary, it's the connection between all these people. The second thing that I realized was why I hadn't managed to learn with this program: because I had never learned anything entirely online. Finally, today, our virtual lives and our physical lives are interconnected.
