Do my capstone office usc enterprise risk management software rfp for money report of financial crisis inquiry commission [Music] [Music] so we're breaking protocol right now typically typically of course the federal government and then provincial government I am NOT a federal minister I'm not in provincial government but I have a council meeting in moments and so I do appreciate the opportunity to say a few words and to be with you before I race off to to Winnipeg City Council to to do some work today I want to begin just by by acknowledging all of our distinguished guests and our elders here today and all of you for being here in Winnipeg welcome to treaty one land the traditional homeland of the maytee were thrilled that you've made the journey many of you have made long journeys from across our great nation to to Winnipeg so welcome the GEMA date to the boss dueling gala fake to new new true von solo territories a parliament a new morality ancestor da de Matisse it's a it's really a pleasure and an opportunity to to say a few words merci de Mer reservoir Palmer vu would weep I've been asked to to speak about reconciliation and the issue of homelessness which affects Canadians from coast to coast to coast and in Winnipeg the issue of reconciliation is at the foremost of our minds as a top priority and I believe the issue of reconciliation and how Canadians from every community and every walk of life and from every background across our country how we respond to the calls to action in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission I believe is the greatest challenge of our generation and it will define our generation in how we respond and whether we respond in a wholehearted and a meaningful way Winnipeg has a community that is growing we're welcoming newcomers from all around the world and our indigenous community is growing as well and it's something that I'm very proud of currently when it bakes population of indigenous peoples is about 11% and with our projections for growth in about 20 years Winnipeg in the surrounding area will reach a million people and at that time our indigenous community will be roughly 25% of our population there is a tremendous opportunity but there is also a real motivation for us to put our hearts and our souls and our energy into responding to the calls to action and the truth and reconciliation commission Winnipeggers have responded and they've responded with honesty and with energy like we've never seen before grassroots organizers many people on this stage that you're going to hear from in a few moments are working very very hard we've introduced in a very proud of introducing mandatory reconciliation training for a roughly 10,000 City of Winnipeg employees and something I'm very proud of and we'll leave a legacy in the minds and hearts of our employees and their families and community members we've also recently introduced when it bakes first-ever indigenous Accord and I'm very grateful that over 80 organizations were the initial signatories to Winnipeg indigenous Accord it's an aspirational document that compels annual reporting of goals and action items on living up to and fulfilling the the calls to action in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission I could talk for about two or three hours about our reconciliation efforts but I want to say to all of you who are also doing your part as Canadians as citizens I know many of you are doing your part in respective communities and there's great work happening in many communities across Canada I want to say thank you so much thank you for the work that you're doing thank you for your leadership and let's spread the word about the importance of our reconciliation work I also want to make the connection to homelessness we've talked a lot during our year of reconciliation last year about the treaties and in my view the treaties were initially visioned to be a roadmap for mutual peace and prosperity for all peoples including our indigenous community members especially for indigenous citizens it was a bridge to the future for economic growth peace and prosperity and as a nation we've lost our way no more glaring example than the painful legacy of residential schools a legacy that lives with us to this day in communities across Canada including here in the city of Winnipeg we live with the effects the intergenerational effects of residential schools right now and we see it in the homes and on the streets in Winnipeg a country is wealthy and is blessed as Canada shouldn't be affected by chronic homelessness to the extent that we are affected it is a shame and it's an embarrassment for our nation that we have so many across our country without a home without a safe place to rest their head tonight and so the issue of homelessness is one that our City Council began tackling more aggressively in one of our first council meetings we supported the end homelessness Winnipeg and you're gonna hear from Louise soon it is a it is an effort that we're supporting with financial support and one that we are optimistic will help us end homelessness as has been the case in in other jurisdictions across Canada we've also been leading on providing financial support to other community stakeholders like the the chat program so the chat program is run by our downtown Winnipeg biz it's the community homeless assistance team and it essentially pays for social workers to walk the streets and look under the bridges and look in the back lanes for our most vulnerable citizens to try to ensure that they're not falling through the cracks as as so many have done later this week there's going to be the CEO CEO sleepout I know Minister fielding is gonna speak in a few moments and I want to commend him for his efforts and for participating in the CEO sleepout as I've had the opportunity to do many many years and then lastly I'll just mention the Winnipeg promise if you get an opportunity to to google it I'd encourage you to do so but the Winnipeg promise is a promise that we're making to the children of our community disproportionately a large group are indigenous and the Winnipeg promise is a commitment that our community is making to them that we're gonna do everything we can to break down the barriers to getting signed up for the Canada learning bond we want to access the federal government funds and we want to make sure that every citizen who's eligible in our community knows that there is financial support for post-secondary education their entire youth that show of confidence and support goes a long way beyond the actual financial support when they hopefully enter their educational when they pursue their educational aspirations later in life we also have many organizations on the ground here who I know are represented in this room great organizations like silo Mission Red Road Lodge of course the the Main Street project and so many others that are on the front lines doing incredibly important work for our citizens that are affected by homelessness and I want to thank them and I'd like you two to give me give them a huge round of applause for their work here right here in Winnipeg please now I know the the issues that we're dealing with here in Winnipeg aren't unique to Winnipeg but we are trying very much to be part of the solution to ending homelessness and I'm really looking forward to hearing more about the discussions and the dialogue coming out of this gathering I know we're very very proud that you that you've come here we're very proud of the work that you're doing and I want to thank you again for not only coming here but for your passions and your respective communities and for sharing them here with decision makers and frontline workers here in the city of Winnipeg enjoy the rest of your day I apologize I've got to get back to City Hall and I wish you all the very best thanks very much merci I'm a question
