Do my capstone logistics florida do my capstone translation dissertation torben schulze winery last thing I remember was that an expulsion and and I am I collapse I remember went to a speech and a big bomb explosion went off is definitely felt grill how's my help as people were trying to respond to a terrible tragedy it got my own emotions going about something like this happened this morning is this November 11th it was Veterans Day and we had a domestic terrorist incident you know we had a congressman representative out here you know just giving a speech and thanking everybody for the service you know civilians military alike and a bomb happened to go off and from there it was pure chaos until individuals and units start arriving taking control the scene well initially University of Colorado Health Science Center and shook campus came to us and they wanted to conduct a joint training between their emergency room residents and our paramedic students the Community College war in conjunction with the University of Colorado Anschutz campus wanted to test and train some of their personnel in the responsive blossom fragmentation injury something they don't see on a daily basis they had the residents in place then it was just a matter of contacting all the different local agencies bringing them together identifying the people that wanted to play identifying the different resources that were necessary that would really respond to a situation like this and inviting them out then it was all logistics after that I think what first struck me was the realism of the of the scenario the number of victims the odors etc all went a great deal of realism to this exercise so it was very easy I think for all the participants to to forget that it was an exercise and to react as if it were a real incident and what people go through in these situations it just kind of it kind of humbles you a little bit if I was gonna look on from the outside it definitely seemed real people are plugging in they're playing for real so I I think people gave it all all that they had and that's what you would want in a real emergency it's going to be pretty epic there's gonna be a lot of things going on and it's gonna be a really good practice for beginning students first responders typically I think fall into a routine of things that they do on day to day calls to where they apply a particular skill set and exercises like this can force people to stretch regardless of the role I know that that we've had crowd control training in our police academy and to see how it works and and how valuable and how effective it is is really great I guess I never realized how how tight all everyone worked together as a team all the EMS all the firefighters police you have different fire departments working together as a unit and you have the crews that are first on scene and you have people that were on the EMS division I think care of the pace is moving them from point A to point B and then to pull this off where you can see where the team response was good or the team response was not so good that's what it's all about is to learn to work together as a team to save lives an infant that's breathing ten times a minute with massive head trauma can we save them because everybody jumped on that little kid at a backboard a c-collar two medics and we're trying to do the most amount of good for the most amount of people students that participated in the volunteers they did a very good job they were given scripts to to follow and they followed them the guys at the trio's these are really good job prioritizing the people and examining you know people are that are screaming and how bad they're doing I think it went well there are some things they could do better but they have obvious support for across agencies and up and down the chain of command so all the all the elements are there for a successful program here I think that the success of this event was a collaborative effort between the student body and the leadership at Community College of Aurora the fire departments the private ambulance agencies additionally we had the private sector the private corporate sector that participated by bringing in a lot of their different products which also helped make this training a phenomenal success addition of the protesters brought a aspect to it that we've never seen before in a in a drill that made it more exciting and more real you know we had film students we had film actors we had theater actors the acting students you could tell they really got into the the protesters look like they're having way too much fun so they did well and that's that's a true asset then we had to go to moulage class where they actually taught us how to put on our makeup and stuff and they learn from real paramedics you know people who see this stuff on a day to day basis so they know what looks real and they know it doesn't look real this is called steel wool and pretty much you put so you dip it in your blood and then you just kind of and it makes a nice cool scratched effect it's kind of weird I think the actors were amazing it would have been an incomplete event without the actors and I think the level of acting helped the first responders fall into their roles more realistically and it provided a very high quality training when your faces gets burned off it's gonna smell you know it's not smoke but that's coming from like a wood fire what happens when the when the flesh is starting to burn it's a different smell doesn't smell quite as pleasant they had a box that they brought in the only one in the world that they flew in from Germany and the box would deliver simulated smells into the area they could hold up to six different smells at one time I did have smell placed OB so I do have a urine smell on me and included you know sense like vomit sense like burnt flesh body odours urine feces and the smells were embedded in those parts that they were able to attach to our students so I had it a huge degree of reality to the entire exercise the fact that the college was willing to to try something on this scale you know I think we made made good benefit of it I get out of it that you know not to take a situation like this lightly so the benefit I think is huge suspension and disbelief and the real-life relevance piece that the first responders the paid professionals that actually responded really bought into this so we had our students learning alongside acting students that were just as realistic almost as any victim you could ever find and it just created a very rich quality experience for our students all the way around well there's no saying what we do the least we should practice the most and nobody really typically has the resources available to stage these exercises on this scale routinely so it's a nice opportunity to actually practice things that we do every day and apply them to a much larger scale practicing this way is a really great way to keep the training alive to keep people fresh the reason it's important to go to this type of extent is we can sit around and we can sit at a table we can say well if this happens this is what we do you know we would just have our tabletop discussions having it like this just adds a little bit more realism to get all this experience it only helps for the next situation when it's not a when it's not a mock situation it's a real situation that we got to prepare for the most important thing that I think we got out of this is that this could happen today or tomorrow the reality and the times that we live in that we have to be prepared and we not you can't handle a situation like this by yourself as a fire department but it's going to take multiple agencies in order to be successful I think that you know the value of this kind of training is there's you can't put a price on this kind of training you you marketing capstone project topics order College of Arts Sciences and Engineering.
