Cfp capstone course canada order capstone hr quiz how to write a thesis statement for informative essay ´╗┐Andrew let's imagine this is any mount in any major league stadium last year why were you so comfortable pitching in 2014 I think I got off to a good start and just kind of built momentum and I feel like I got better every time out and I was able to make my adjustments when I needed to and you know I was fortunate to be the with a good group of guys you know first off in Boston and then in Baltimore especially and you know you kind of feed off each other and just felt like everything seemed to go right for the most part and had a rough stretch in the middle of season but other than that you know just seemed like I was getting better and better every time out what kind of adjustments did you make what kind of things are you talking about a lot of times I think of it as you know just making a small tweak to you know a mental thought about my mechanics and it kind of sounds complicated but you know just something you know maybe today it's you know I want to you know drive my back leg towards home plate or just keep my front shoulder closed something as simple as that and keeping it to one item I thinking a lot of times as pitchers you know at least with me personally I get into trouble the longer that list gets you know and I've got to give five things right in order to deliver a pitch it's not gonna be a good day it's gonna be a rough one and you know I think last year I was able to simplify and just keep it one thing at a time I'm glad you brought up mechanics because a couple of years ago you did end up simplifying things while you were with the Red Sox what happened there and how did that help you so much I showed up spring training Bobby Valentine's first year and just throwing my side sessions you know the very very beginning of spring training and Bobby kind of you know watched and saw me throw from the the slide step and you know you know in his way of speaking it was you know that's it that's all you're gonna use and for me was a great thing I know that that year in Bobby Valentine's reign is a Boston's managers a little bit controversial and it didn't work out as everybody wanted but for me personally that was big it's simplified and instead of having a wind-up in a leg kick I just went to a slide step and really eliminated a lot of moving parts which for me has always tended to be a problem so explain to me or actually show me what you're talking about in terms of simplifying things how did you simplify things okay so before hand I had to wind ups I had a full wind-up nobody on base and you know you take the rock and then you go to a full leg kick and you deliver the ball so that's what I did right nobody on base and then with a runner on base you have to come to the stretch the runner but at a higher leg kick and all these moving parts so Bobby's idea was to exclusively use a slide step which a lot of guys use that as a method of controlling a fast runner but regardless of who's on first base it could be the slowest catcher in the league and hasn't stolen a base in his career I'm gonna do that slide step so the slide step is basically just pick up your foot and go to home there's no leg kick super simple super easy eliminates all the moving parts and for me it just allowed me to get on time which all your pitchers use that a lot just like hitters do as well and it just allowed me to eliminate a lot of those unnecessary moving parts that tended to get in my way I was wondering if you could show us the grip on your slider and and why you hold it the way you do and if you ever tinker with that grip for years I would tinker I think I'm kind of a believer that you know if you use the same grip for too long you know you kind of get comfortable and fall into bad habits with it so you mix it up but the last couple years I've been pretty consistent I grabbed it right across the the label you know for whatever reason whether that's superstitious or whether maybe that hides something from the hitters but always grabbed across the label and to throw it harder I get a more out my fingertips and get my fingers closer to the top of what we call a horseshoe and to throw a little bit slower and bigger break I kind of choke it a little bit more but kind of lately you've tended to fall in between the two but you know I think ideally if I'm really going good I can control the speed somewhere between you know as low as 80 182 miles an hour as high as you know 89 or 90 but generally falls at 80 40 84 to 85 miles an hour and kind of between the two and you know I mix and match the shape depend on what I see out of the hitter now is the index finger or the middle finger more important for you definitely the middle finger I think what I'm trying to establish when I feel my grip is I want to feel as much seam and pressure on my middle finger as I can and you know I just that's what I you know how that's how I visualize creating the torque on the ball and making a break your slider doesn't seem to be the type of pitch where a lot of guys will throw a backdoor slider to a righty you seem to wanna attack with your slider you're you're coming right inside a lot of times you want them to think it's a pitch they can hit and then by the time it's there they're swinging over it a lot of times absolutely I think you know most to righties I want to throw we call it back foot slider and you know I like my chances of the pitch so I'm not you know incredibly fine with it it's not a pitch that I feel like I have to Nick the corner with obviously if I leave it over the middle of plate it's gonna get hit pretty hard but I feel like I can work it you know from the down and end part of the zone - you know even beyond and and just kind of you know as the count works in my favor move it closer and closer to the hitter but you know it's one of those things somebody there's some days and I feel great and I can throw it back door slider but more often than not I'm just trying to throw it somewhere you know in that back foot area what's the best compliment you got from a hitter last year did you ever so mesmerized some guy or so baffle a guy that a day or two later on the field during warm-ups or something he said I can't believe you did X I don't know I don't know exactly that but I know when I came to Baltimore they said Chris Davis was the happiest guy on the team because he'd have to face me anymore so you know you know chris is a pretty awesome guy but that was a pretty big compliment to me to come in and not have to you know to feel pretty confident my stuff knowing that he was excited that I was on the same team as him how much of a mental battle is being a pitcher because you could go out and get the first guy out and feel great about yourself but then things could start to go off the rails and two batters later its second and third and you might have a Chris Davis or somebody else like that up how much do you have to battle through the mental side of things to stay confident on the mound I just got to grind it out and I think you know some days are better than others and you know there's some times we'll throw the perfect pitch and it'll get hit guys are good enough at this level you just have to you know you know the cliches of you know pitch to pitch are out to hell whatever you know however you look at it are true you have to you have to move on you know you might have just struck out the best hitter in the league you got to get the next guy out so it's a you know it's just a grind and staying positive and in saying confident yourself coming up we head to the driving range and watch Andrew hit a smaller white ball sounds decent actually I'll take it we should quit capstone ski centre kent order Rochester Institute of Technology, Henrietta.
