Capstone string quartet order capstone ridge on the brazos for money write critical thinking on sex education now so what I've attempted to do today is craft and you see the title of my talk brand value and protection Anti Doping after the Lance Armstrong case but I'm gonna I'm gonna dive a little bit into the Lance Armstrong case one it's you know of interest to many of you I'm sure still there's a lot of him from misinformation out in the press that I think when you hear the inside accurate portrayal of what actually happened you will decide whether or not the lessons that we think are important are also important to you as you move forward these are the rules that all competitors agreed to play by and when certain people who have agreed to a set of rules violate those rules a couple things happen one I think from a brand value perspective and I suspect many of you would hopefully agree some might disagree that from a brand value perspective it undermines the value of what the competition is if we knew certain competitors could gain an illegal unfair violation of the rules advantage it would it would take away the very nature of what the competition is supposed to be about evenly-matched competitors going head-to-head to determine who wins under an agreed to set of rules where hard work where commitment where talent where those things make the difference not because someone drafted when they weren't allowed to not because someone put a small motor in their bike when they weren't allowed to not because someone used EPO or blood transfusion or steroids or insulin or igf-1 when they're not allowed to importantly we have an independent board of directors and I think I can't under stress the importance of Independence when it comes time to anti-doping efforts because you have to make difficult decisions I mean the decision to move forward against a global icon and his team that won seven Tour de France's is not an easy decision no sport leader should have to make that decision and I can assure you being involved with making that decision it would have been far easier if my duty was to the sport to raise revenues to preserve medals to have World Championships remain intact have Olympic medals remain intact if that's my goal as a sport leader the conflicting duty to also police myself in a case like that would have been impossible and and it's not by chance that by design we were set up as an independent organization so to quickly get to the cycling investigation I mentioned the sport exec who picked up the phone and called us yes we got a call I think it was the Friday before Easter Sunday and in 2010 indicating that a former teammate of Lance Armstrong's had just told this individual a whole lot of information about what was going on truly going on in the sport of cycling many of you all probably remember we had a case in 26 2006 against flawed Landis he received a two-year suspension for a positive CIRT II test out of 2006 Tour de France well Floyd and us ultimately got together ironically we met in this very hotel think the third floor conference rooms but after a day and a half of meeting with Floyd we in hearing what he had to say we essentially had two requirements number one you have to be truthful and everything you tell us and number two you have to be full and complete you can't just tell us the part of the story about the people in the peloton that you don't like you've got to tell us everything can't just tell us about those that ultimately you might be seeking in a payment from in a whistleblower suit which ultimately was filed you've got to tell us everything and that's a requirement with all witnesses and after we heard what Floyd said and then that was quickly followed up by other athletes and those associated with the US Postal Services team another one of those meetings happened also in this hotel with one of those athletes I know good or bad memories I'm not sure whit we quickly put together given the breadth and the depth of the dirty culture that we saw we quickly put together a strategy that we all could appreciate and understand and go to work to try to dismantle to the extent we could and we knew we needed to do that in a very quick fashion for two primary reasons number one this was summer as I mentioned 2012 we ultimately noticed Lance Armstrong and five other individuals team director two doctors three doctors and a team trainer who also had charges brought against them in addition to him as he was the only athlete who didn't come in and sit down with us to be part of the solution we had the Olympic Games coming up and there were going to be at least three to four of these athletes top cyclists in the world who were going to be on the Olympic team would have gone to London and won medals top time trials one of the stage races stage riders rather and we had evidence of their dubbing and it would have been a shame if those athletes would have gone to London and then after London whether through our investigation a criminal investigation a whistleblower suit a book that they're doping came out it would unnecessarily have tainted in our opinion that entire US Olympic team and people wouldn't remember the great performances from the games what they would have remembered is those three or four dirty American cyclists who went over and you know tainted the games from a doping perspective what was somewhat unanticipated given that during the Mary Jones case the growth of social media Twitter particularly was not around but you see Lance two plus million followers and very effectively you know some might say in an evil way but very sophisticated and how they use Twitter and again Twitter as you own though is not you know articulating facts and conclusions and evidence and it's just conclusions and so here you see just an example of very emotional words of conclusions heinous allegations and it's also not by chance that many of these showed up in The Washington Post and as some of you probably know Sally Jenkins sports columnist The Washington Post also wrote Lance Armstrong's book not about the bike so obviously if that becomes fiction which you know it now has then she has a lot to lose as well from a reputational if not a legal standpoint for publishing that book and they were typically the outfit whether it was through a tweet or directly providing the information not linking leaking it because you can provide the information on if you're the athlete and having you know very skewed inaccurate headlines being drafted all aimed at trying to cut our funding as best they can and that was their stated goal by the way privately was to bankrupt you sada and as I think I mentioned previously we get roughly to two-thirds this year eight point seven five million dollars from the United States government as a federal grant not not being a federal agency but as a federal grant like many other private entities they also were pretty clever at getting you know celebrities you know actors others out there here's one from Matthew McConaughey you can see stop the investigation that you saw it in the Lance Armstrong and if you go to the link you'll see the strip the tax funded status of USANA so you've got these celebrity athletes out there doing that that and some of you may have heard me say this before but that was the one that finally got McConaughey off my wife's top five most loved most loved actors or lusted after actors only dropped to number six however capstone microturbine
