Capstone park website ap capstone graduation for money kaupthing bank annual report 2018 gsxr ´╗┐hi I'd like to show you how to grow or start growing a fig tree from a dormant fig tree cutting these cuttings are removed from the fig tree during the normal course of say pruning and usually you prune the fig tree when it's dormant and you can store these cuttings for a couple of months months in the refrigerator you can usually find these online you can find them on eBay February to April and if you visit some online garden forums or forums where people who like to grow figs hang out you can maybe buy or get some free fig cuttings and learn about this process but it's it's an interesting plant to grow to be able to eat your own figs we're all familiar with the figs you can find in the grocery store you can find the Fig Newtons and the dried figs but when you have your own fresh fig off of your own fig tree you find that these really pale in comparison so just the first step is to get the cutting of course and then one of the techniques is to wrap the cutting and damp paper towels or damp newspaper and place it in a baggie and you know you air out the baggie every day to exchange some new fresh air place it in a warm location not a hot location maybe on top of the refrigerator out of direct sunlight and if everything goes correctly you'll be getting roots somewhere along this cutting so let's let's start I like to use newspaper there there's some train of line of thought that the ink and newspaper helps prevent mold while you're trying to get to the point where you have cutting some we have reached on the cutters they're also you know it's a race against time and also you know these same conditions so to promote mold and mildew and fungus and you're trying to get trying to get roots before any of that takes hold of your cutting and maybe you lose your cutting due to rot or some type of disease so you know I like to squeeze out the newspaper get all the excess water out so it's it's it's just damp and some people like to keep you know the ends of the cutting sticking out of the newspaper I usually just wrap the whole cutting and just put it in a regular baggie and if you have some you know if you have different varieties of cuttings you want to make sure to go ahead and put some type of information on the bag use a variety and maybe the date because you will lose track of what's what and you won't remember the next day if you don't start off immediately you know writing down the information on these baggies so again take this baggie put it in a nice you know place that you know won't place around 70 degrees and 80 degrees on top of refrigerator out of direct sunlight another method that people use is they just use speculum peat moss and there's another line of thought or people believe that the the sphagnum peat moss tends to inhibit mold and and fungus from growing on your cutting maybe gives a bit or even consistency of humidity and moisture to the cutting as you're trying to form roots mice assumed to have gravitated to this method also I recently saw these shoe boxes that the 99 cents at Home Depot and I put Spagna m-- peat moss in I put my cuttings in these shoeboxes so if you're lucky after 2-3 weeks the different varieties have different rates or difficulty levels of getting the roots to form but this particular one is called the grown on a grown a let me show you some roots that have formed so there's some significant root growth on this cutting and it can now be transferred to the next step which is I use 24 ounce clear plastic cups because you want to be able to see how the roots are progressing how they're coming along because eventually you know you want to transfer this or you're going to transfer this to a soil mixture some people go directly from this stage to a soil mixture perhaps so you want to lighten up the soil with some perlite again you probably good idea to put them in clear cups so you get an idea of how the roots are progressing and how the cutting is progressing so I like to transition what I use is a perlite mixture which is sixty percent perlite 40 percent vermiculite and you know here's the clear plastic cup I've melted holes in it for additional drainage and the holes on the side - - you know preferred for drainage and allow some aeration of this pro-lite for make you light mixture so let's go ahead fill this cup up with some of the mixture put the cutting in get some more I've dampened this mixture ahead of time but I still like to water water in the cutting and let the excess water drain out yes now again it's very important to store this in a manner where you're able to have high humidity you want something higher than 70 percent you could put a baggie over this put a couple of holes in the baggie so you have sort of a mini greenhouse what a lot of people are doing is they go and buy those Rubbermaid storage containers that way you can put the number of cuttings in there and the additional moisture that you find all these cups will help maintain a high humidity level and you want to air air it out every day you know open up the cover and let let some fresh air in and make sure that the Tupperware of the Rubbermaid container storage container is not in direct sunlight you want to just have this subjected to ambient light and if everything goes according to plan you the routes will progress and you'll get some some growth on the cutting is a cutting I started March 19th I don't know if you can see some roots here that are visible on the side of the cup this particular variety is called LSU gold there are hundreds of varieties of figs and part of the fun is collecting these different varieties figs come in all the different shapes and colors and fig trees have different leaf patterns and some varieties will grow better in your area than that other varieties and people like to collect the different varieties too just just for the challenge of being able to grow this fig so here's the Rubbermaid container I use to store the cuttings I recently started I bought a couple of these acrylic pieces that you can get at Home Depot to replace the original cover to let more light in and seems to be working out also on the bottom you can see on the bottom of the container you can get these louver grading type of material that they use for drop ceilings around where the light fixture is going to be for a fluorescent light that way it keeps the cup off of the bottom even though you've got drain holes that allows the cups to not just be sitting on the bottom and you get better drainage that way and maybe better circulation through the through the cups to is the roots are growing is a fig tree I started last year and as you can see there is a fig on it and this particular variety is called Brunswick I've never had a Brunswick fig so a plant this young and you know you probably should just remove the fruit so it puts more energy into growing the fig tree itself but it's just one and I'll leave it on and you can see the different leaf pattern for this particular variety so if you're in a gardening and you want to grow something unusual and you like a challenge by all means give it a try I mean it's a very interesting plant and you know even if even if you're in the north you can grow fig trees you can go online read up on the techniques that people use to protect these during the winter months you can bring them into a shed but it's good to have them go dormant so you know down to 32 degrees and even a little bit lower but you want to protect them from from high winds and cold winds and and temperatures lower than that because you will get die off or you might lose the whole plant so if like I said if you're in the gardening I'd say give it a try and I hope that this video gives you some my information to get started ok thank you research proposal topics in environmental management Globalization and International Affairs Program.
