Capstone paper examples burning flag order capstone san marcos tx practice writing in hangul ´╗┐first and foremost you have to know I'm a Baptist preacher so I have got to start these remarks by saying giving all glory and honor to god I'm really appreciative to the trustees and their families that have come out this morning faculty staff and also the friends in the community my name is joseph collins i'm a second year student here at austin bread i am also an associate minister at freedom home baptist church here in austin and my pastor is the honor roll Oscar Howard all right got all the Baptist stuff out of the way so I wanted to tell you just a little bit about me and my background just kind of where I came from because that's really integral to Who I am today and one here at Austin grad I was born and raised in a military family I'm actually a third-generation Air Force veteran I served six years in the Air Force worked in military intelligence my father served 20 years in the Air Force and his father before him served in the Army Air Corps in World War two and that's a legacy that I'm really proud of and I'm thankful for the things that my family has taught me about public service and community service and it has really been a blessing to our family you know I got out of the Air Force was honorably discharged and started a career in technology was kind of moving through life and things were going really well and you know I'll tell you there's nothing like flying business class from Houston to London to just really expand your ego and to make you think that life is just good you know kind of like that guy that said you know I'm going to tear down these little barns and I'm gonna build some bigger barns well you know in a technological way that's sort of what I said to God you know born again love God filled with the Holy Spirit but in effect I now realize that that's what my heart said to God you know and so I was moving along in my technology career and it was the year 2001 and was working for a company that I really enjoyed working for loved it to death some of the smartest people I ever worked with in my life there was one small problem the name of the company was Enron you might have heard about this guy and so unfortunately my career and my 401k and stock portfolio all went down the drain and you know and I found myself in a position of starting over you know and at that point I had to learn that God was redirecting my life and he led me into a career of public health my undergraduate degree is in psychology and I started working with vulnerable populations people struggling with mental illness drug addiction I'm certified as a drug and alcohol counselor and also working with people that are struggling with hiv/aids it's been some of the most rewarding work that I've ever been involved in my life nothing in technology compares to working with vulnerable populations and you know one of the things that happened was as I was really kind of learning to merge my knowledge about health and my understanding of faith you know there were there were some conflicts there I don't think that there are conflicts between those two things in heaven I really do believe that God created us mind body and spirit but sometimes our communities and our leaders don't understand in it and sometimes our churches don't understand that and so I had a lot to learn about the intersection of faith and health and about the role of the church ministering to the home man at some point in my life I I did enroll here at Austin graduate for me it's a smaller school with a conservative interpretation of God and spirituality i expanded on that a little bit with dr. Reed earlier this morning I won't say what I told him but but but effectively one of the things that I learned over the last several years is that I wasn't sure that I was a conservative but as I began to be exposed to more people and more things I realized I really unconcerned in my spirituality the other thing for me here at austin grad is that it has a general focus on theology rather than divinity I really had a struggle when I came here and one and my first was it my first semester I believe it was either my first second semester last year one of the classes that I took was introduction to Christian ministry with dr. Reid and I really needed that class because I was struggling with that pastor thing you know I have friends they couldn't wait to get out of school to become pastors I mean they wanted it so bad they could taste it and I kept thinking to myself when is this pastor thing gonna kick in you know and it never did you know and I and dr. Reid was very gracious and my fellow students were also gracious in the sense that they let me process that out loud you know and sometimes that link but I really needed to solve that Kim Van Zandt doesn't know it but something she said to me was probably one of the most pivotal pivotal comments that helped me sort of understand that it was okay that God had not developed me to be a pastor that there were other things in the ministry to do and I'm grateful for that I'm longer carry that guilt and that angst about that pastor thing not kicking in and so I'm in a much better place one of the other before before I kind of go into how the Lord has allowed me to put ministry into practice on at this time I want to share one other thing that I thought was a real opportunity for me dr. Peterson provided an opportunity for me to attend what is called the seminary interfaith retreat and it was an opportunity we're about 50 of us were all masters level students in theology or divinity and one-third of us were Christian one-third were Muslim and one-third were Jewish and we were sequestered at a retreat and Lake Texoma for three days now the great thing about it was they told us prior to going in they said leave your proselytizing at the door you are not here to convert anybody and academically what we focused on were the Old Testament prophets but we had an opportunity to really explore other faiths and and to really come to an understanding of who other people are and why they worship the way they do each of the three groups that was represented at the retreat had the opportunity to put on a worship service for the other two I've got to tell you dr. Peterson it was it was one of the most interesting experiences of my life to that point my in my introduction to interfaith dialogue had been pretty limited that was a fantastic experience and so I'm grateful to the trustees and I'm thankful to the school and to dr. Peterson for providing that opportunity one of the things that's happened in my life that's been a tremendous blessing is that I was accepted into the clinical pastoral education program at seton hospital here in Austin and what that program does is it trains masters or PhD level seminarians in the art of working as a kaplan and so I am clinically assigned to show Creek which is a psychiatric hospital here in Austin what a tremendous experience I just love it and we rotate throughout various Seton facilities and clinics throughout the year so so my current clinical assignment is that shoal creek but later in the year i'll work at some of the other facilities i can tell you that in terms of God using me in ministry when I sit across a table from a young adolescent girl who cuts herself when I'm at the bedside of an 80 year old woman that says I'm having surgery tomorrow and I'm scared when I sit across from a 37 year old man who says you know I voluntarily admitted myself here for alcohol detox it is in those moments that all of my training and psychology all of my training and cpe everything that I've learned here at Austin graduate and my faith all get funneled down into that one encounter and it's in those moments that I know but I'm exactly where God wants me to be thank you do my ryerson mechanical engineering capstone Touro College.
