Capstone industries florida write for me csulb capstone course list presentation dans un entretien dembauche chez ´╗┐hey guys today we are talking about wonder this is a children's novel a wildly popular one that came out in 2012 and we're comparing it to the film adaptation released in 2017 that stars Jacob Tremblay I think that this is a very difficult book to adapt to film which we'll get into but there are a few areas where I think the film made some improvements on the book material and then there's a few areas where I think it struggled to adapt the material to film so the first thing that I want to go over though is August face because it's so central to this story if you're not familiar with this story it's essentially about a little boy who has been homeschooled his whole life and he's about to enter into fifth grade the first year of middle school and he has a severely misfigured face because of genetic defects that he was important with so he's had all kinds of reconstructive surgeries on his face and people will still react to him on the street with fear or terror like sometimes they'll actually scream when I was watching Auguste in the movie I honestly thought he looked really adorable he had some scarring on his face a lot of scarring on his face and one of his eyes was pretty down turned at an angle and his ears were misfigured but that is significantly toned down from the book's description of him we don't hear that much about Auguste Pullman's facial features from his perspective and it's not really until around page 88 when we get his older his teenage older sisters perspective via so here's what it says eyes that slant downward in an extreme angle with top eyelids that are always halfway closed and lower eyelids that look like they're inside out tiny cauliflower shaped ears that are too far down on his head a severe overbite in an extremely undersized jaw bone and then Jack's chapter describes Auguste eyes as being way too far down on his face and I wonder if if they felt like even though the book is about getting over someone's appearance and seeing them for who they are I wonder if they felt like audiences might not be able to do that and if you're looking to go out and buy this book I would try to buy the original version or try to buy an edition without the movie tie-in because the movie tie-in edition has still images from the film and I think that visualizing August's face as its described in the book is a really important exercise in empathy and anti-bullying which is its kind of the theme of the theme of the book so I'd mentioned earlier that I thought wonder is a pretty difficult book to adapt to film and the reason for that is because there's so many flashbacks there are a lot of different point-of-view characters throughout the book and it kind of moves sequentially throughout the school year for the most part it does that but the transitions in between point-of-view characters isn't totally linear usually at the start of a new point of view chapter ground will be covered in the past that you get that that character's perspective of past events so sometimes I think the film did this really well I think it did it really well with Miranda you kind of get a brief inner monologue understanding why she signed up for for the acting Club what she was doing at summer camp why she wasn't in touch with via I thought that ground was covered pretty well and in vienna's perspective the sudden flashback where she's with her grandmother at Coney Island that I thought was like really jarring and weird weirded me out and I saw people in the theater kind of looking at each other when that happened because there was just a very sudden shift in location and also time kind of without warning you're like what's happening and then and then the scene was like a little bit cheesy so I think the movie handled that well in some places and in other places at struggle another change that the film made was reducing the number of characters who have a section told from their point of view the film actually included most of them which I was really happy about and I was expecting them to cut some of the perspectives down just because when you're adapting a whole novel down into a two-hour film some things need to be cut Justin vias boyfriend has a chapter from his perspective in the book and summer the girl who sits with August at lunch also has a chapter from her perspective I want to talk about Isabel August mother so she does not have a point of view chapter in the book but I thought that the film did a really great job of succinctly adding some content that gave the audience insight into her perspective and this was done so quickly with this really brief shot of her sitting alone in the room where she used to homeschool August on August first day of school and just seeing her sitting alone there looking at where August used to sit you you get so much emotion and information about how she's feeling at that time and I wish I wish the book actually had some more information from for August mother's point of view and probably my favorite change that the film made from the book was including the scene with Julianne where you get more information about Julian's perspective and I really wish that Julianne had a chapter on his point of view in the wonder book he there is a second book it's called like wonder 1.5 in this series it's not quite a sequel it's book 1.5 and it's called the Julianne chapters and actually I have it on hold at the library and I'm really excited to read it but I didn't really want to get a separate book to read about his perspective I think that after the summer camp incident that would have been the perfect time to put in a chapter from Julian's perspective and I was disappointed that it wasn't there in the book so I was really happy to see this scene where Julian gets caught out by mr. Tuschman for all these bullying letters that he's been writing and leaving in August Locker and you see you see how his parents are and you think oh my goodness like I you kind of feel bad for Julian and you you at least maybe you don't like him I can't I can't say I actually liked the kid right but you can see why he is the way he is also just an overall compliment for the film I think did a really good job of infusing humor into the film I thought all of the comedic lines were well timed oh and Wilson in particular I thought was pretty funny in this film and it was touching to see a family who's going through this kind of rocky period of transition and they're laughing and they're happy and I think that's a great thing to see in a movie geared towards children but sometimes life is tough but if you stick together you can get through it and the last comment I have about the film is that there's a scene where the fifth graders are away at a kind of like three-day camping event and I think that the film really struggled to adapt that that scene it was over like that it was over very quickly in the in the film and the book builds it up a bit more so I was a little bit disappointed I think that that scene in particular was was quite rushed but overall I gave a rating of an A to wonder the children's novel and I gave a rating of a B to the 2017 film adaptation I think was a solid effort I think is worth watching I enjoyed myself watching it and I would generally recommend it to most people it might be more of like a like a streaming read box kind of option depending on what you spend your money on for what the types of films that you you pay to see in theatres but especially around the holiday season it was just a good heartwarming like feel-good film so those are my thoughts on wonder please leave your thoughts down below I would love to know if you have read the book or seen the film as always thanks so much for watching I upload on Fridays and Sundays and I will see you in the next one srna capstone project ideas for money White Plains campus.
