Capstone home incentives 2018 delaware write for me internet of things topics for seminar college essay gay parents I think that there's this stigma attached to being low-income where it just makes you feel like oh I'm poor like I'm broke all these things that aren't necessarily true and on the flip side just because your mom has some Michael Kors purses and your family is a two-car household doesn't mean that you're not low-income you could still be low-income and have these comforts of life because there's always a story behind everything just because somebody has a designer bag doesn't mean that they paid full price for it doesn't mean that it's real it doesn't mean that they're rich it doesn't mean you know all these assumptions that we make are just not helping us see the truth in any way and I think that when you're applying for college and you don't know what your family's financial situation is it just sets you up to make mistakes like you have to know the financial position of your family and where y'all stand in order to be able to know how much you can afford for a school which schools you should be realistically looking at etcetera this is not to say and I say this in almost every video this is not to say that because the school has an expensive sticker price or an expensive cost of attendance that you shouldn't apply that's not what I'm saying but I think that it's also unrealistic to believe like these websites and these people when they tell you that because you're low-income you're gonna get all this help that you're basically gonna be able to afford going anywhere because that's not true and you will hit that brick wall like nothing else money for education seems like is running out and that it like it has been running out for quite a few years because it is so expensive to pay for college and there are so many kids going and applying to college and there's so many people that can't afford it that just take shortcuts and lie and stuff and find a way to qualify for grain and money that they really should not necessarily be getting and people who really do need it who just don't know how to get it or that it's even available get the short end of the stick on that and I think that first generation students meaning somebody whose parents didn't go to college or didn't go to college in the u.s. I neither of my parents or my mom or my stepdad went to college in the United States and I honestly feel like a first generation student because there was just such little knowledge in my household about applying to college and as much as people outside help you you need a solid base either at home or someone outside who is there almost like a family member every step of the way helping you and making themselves available with like all the information that you need because it's really hard to know where to even look I just want you if you're watching this video obviously you've clicked on it because you're wondering about what it is to be low income or if you are low income or if if you're low income if you can afford school I just want to let you know the most important thing that you can do is tedious as hell but go to the school's website of the schools that you're looking at you're looking to apply to and look at whether they have a cost of attendance calculator click on that little calculator widget and they will take you to another like separate tab and it'll ask you all these questions and it does not matter if you're an eighth grader tenth grader 11th grader 12th grader but you haven't done your FAFSA it doesn't matter click on that little calculator thing fill out all those damn questions that I know take so long and are so boring and annoying and you have to ask your parents for every other thing but fill that out and at the end it'll tell you about how much you'll have to pay for that school and it'll give you such a realistic look at how much money you're gonna be you're gonna have to throw at a school in order to attend it so I just think that it's important to realize that just because you don't feel like you're poor doesn't mean that you have enough money to go out and go to college and not think about it beforehand you have to think about financially what makes the most sense in terms of going to school should you apply to private schools or should you stick to public schools do you have all these options how are your academics bad academics on top of being low income and not knowing it horrible combination so I have a story I all through high school in middle school that I attended in the US did not ever get free or reduced lunch but then when I went to apply for school for college I realized damn I'm getting a whole lot of help I wonder why and it's cuz literally we're like at the bottom of like the income scales for how many people are in the household versus like the income of the household and it's things like this that you just don't know and they don't tell you at school and I came to find out about this like when it was kind of too late for me to do anything about it because I was just filling out my FAFSA all the deadlines were already through for schools and it's too late and that's what I don't want to happen to other people I want other kids to know how much they can afford for school and to apply to schools that make sense so that they're not so that you are not applying all to all schools that are a reach financially and then find out that you either can't attend any of them or maybe even worse attend one of them and then have to drop out because it's still free and expensive after the first year so even if you don't think that you're low income and definitely if you don't know if you are please make sure to go to the school's website like the college's website and click on the little Cost Estimator calculator thingy and answer those questions I know it's annoying but it's worth it it's basically like an instant FAFSA it will tell you how much money like you're either gonna qualify for or how much money you're gonna have to pay for the school depending on how they do it don't leave financially to the last minute nobody talks about it other than fill out your FAFSA fill out your FAFSA but there's so much more to that and if you do find out the you are low-income get on applying for scholarships immediately I know that it's annoying to have to write essays and essays and essays on top of having to do schoolwork and on top of having to do applications but if an essay is gonna get you a thousand-dollar scholarship it's worth it and if it's not hey the most that you lost us an hour and a half and asking a couple people how it looks if you need someone to help you write an essay for a scholarship hit me up send me an email it's College app girl at gmail.com I want to help you go to college be able to afford it be able to know how much you can afford before it's too late before you feel like it's too late so I know this was a little bit of a passionate video but going to college seems like the only way to break a poverty cycle but if you don't even know that you're poor to begin with that just makes it ten times harder so I hope that this was helpful to you guys and if you think that it'll be helpful to someone else please let them know and lick them up to this video I'll talk to you guys in the next one capstone development group birmingham CUNY Law School, Long Island City.
