Capstone high ropes write for me capstone exercise 2016 joe tsien scientific reports editorial board hi my name is Lynn Harvey I study amenge aerospace engineering with a year in North America I went to Virginia Tech will trilliums Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University for a year and I'm in my fourth year now my highlight of my time studying abroad would be traveling I can see a lot of different places in America and having unplanned adventures hi my name is Karen Wright I'm in my fourth year and I'm studying Hispanic studies and I spent my year abroad in mafia in the south of Spain and where I worked as a British Council language assistant and for eight months it's difficult to choose just one highlight I think it's a fantastic experience and you have the opportunity to meet so many people and to experience so many new things that it's just impossible to pick one thing my name is Amy I study journalism German I'm in my final year and I went to Heidelberg in Germany for a year and I think the highlight for me was probably going to Europa Park which is and Europe's biggest theme park and it was just a brilliant summer's day it was amazing my name is Andrew mcLaughlin I study Human Geography it's my third year Sheffield and I spent my last year my second year at the University of Wollongong in Australia my best memories is probably travelling going to the World Cup rugby and integrating and spending Christmas in water and I think the first thing that I learnt was practicality hem clothes on nights out you know people wouldn't think of wearing kind of tiny outfits and no coats and in winter and and I also learned not to judge people kind of prejudge people because I had a bit of a preconception but people were a lot more friendly and the stereotype of general Australians is a bit wrong not all of them go out and get drunk the whole time they don't all spend all day on the beach a lot of work has to be done and it's done at University lots of Australians perceiving these people to have posh accents and they ask you to say certain words they assume all these people like tea and always ask you to go drink tea with them yes and I made an insensitive comment to one of my Republican friends in my naivety I assumed that a lot of Republicans were as portrayed in the media very extreme care of bible-bashing type people and and then when I made a comment coming up to the election I made a joke about Republicans and then my friend Philip turned around and said oh I'm a Republican and he clearly knew that I just it was me being naive and we had a laugh about - and I apologized and from the experience I did learn the people real regular people can be Republicans and I just felt that my view of political spectrums was increased my knowledge is increased by that so that's a good thing I think it's just the kind of emotional rollercoaster that you go through when you have to actually live in a new place so first there's the whole excitement like this if exotic this is amazing they're kind of part that you get if you're on a holiday and then there's a part after the holiday where you actually realize that you have to live in this place you have to adjust all of the customs that you're used to so that's the kind of dip down you might feel anxious a bit withdrawn and but then you work your way through this and then you get to it's kind of an adjustment period where you're kind of fitting in with this new culture and then in the end you'll just settle down and you know make a new life for yourself and and you'll just be at home in this culture you might actually prefer some parts of the culture to your own and then when you actually do go back home you might experience reverse culture shock which I definitely did and which is kind of you've got to adjust to being back in your own culture now and you know there's parts that you might have definitely different feelings towards them before you went abroad and I think I've definitely experienced culture shock when I arrived was in the middle of a festival so there was plenty of things going on there was lots of things to do lots of things to see places to go lots of restaurants to eat in and I think you kind of got swept away in that and once that had finished it sort of reality sets in and you realized that this was your new life and there was things that would annoy you and get on your nerves about things in the country different customs that they have and different practices and eventually over time and I think with the help of friends that you meet with a navy from that country or friends from home and the skyking family back at home and really salt helps and you find it easy to sort of overcome that and together collectively as a group and I got my boyfriend to send over some super noodles and some English magazines but now I kind of I explored the place and you know found kind of distracting myself and found new friends and then actually found you know experienced some of the German food and things like that and find that I actually really like some preferred it to old food and I quite miss it now yeah you just have to kind of work through it and helps if you realize that you're going through it as well well when I was on my own I just got on free bus rolled it around the hallway around went to the beach took some photos of the area walks through the shops got to know the area better by myself try to keep busy really now the only thing I would have done differently it would be to have done a bit of research before I went on kind of studying that the university would expect of you before I went because the layout of the classes the modules was very different and I did find I panicked a bit when I got there and because I wasn't used to that so if I'd been better prepared for that then I might not have been stressed about the work at the store I think I would have definitely tried to integrate more with the with the Spanish people and spend less time with people from back here in the UK and and I would have also tried to travel a lot I didn't really get much of an opportunity to travel and because I was working at five days a week so I would have loved to have had the opportunity to go to more places in Spain so really seize that opportunity I think the best thing that I can say is to just enjoy it always have at the back of your mind that this is a once in a lifetime experience and before you know it you're gonna be back in the IC wishing that you could go back abroad and so just enjoy it and if you mess up or making mistakes just laugh and you know you learn from everything so yeah it's just gonna be the best time of your life really yeah I think making just make the most of your time is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be able to just pick up and go and study abroad and without having much to think about at home so yeah just take the opportunities that come do things that you wouldn't have thought that you would do back home and try and see as many places as possible and just get to know people from lots of different cultures and yeah that's pretty much it I think the key thing is just to go out there and enjoy yourself the time will absolutely fly by so literally go out there seize every opportunity that is given to you and just have a really good time you enterprise risk management background for money Downtown Brooklyn campus.
