Capstone education amritsar capstone spanish books for money the study of criminal evidence I've been living in Rockaway all 22 years a mother once known is the playground of New York Rockaway was a summer hot snack the beach hotels carnivals Rockaway had it all even movies were fitted as you can tell about a footage this was a long time the recent renovations Iraq would have been Teresa's behind us the new homes new parts and retail stores at a beginner rebuild around away so what it once was I'm not sure what's my true feeling behind the change of a place I won't be able to recognize in a few years but I'm not against I live in Rockaway 21 years I was born in Rockaway in 1939 and except for a short period in the Navy and a short during working the Weekly Reader in Connecticut I've been here all my life I think you know you have to know that the Rockaway in in the 40s and the 50s and even into the 60s was a great place to grow up and in the winter it was isolated there was nobody around you went to school is the same kids here at the every year there were you know 40 50 thousand people and luckily and then all of a sudden on Memorial Day there was like this you know the boardwalk opened up and with all the stores and movie theaters and the restaurant you know in the food places and and all these new kids moved in and came back and you saw them you hadn't seen them you know from the Bronx and Brooklyn broccoli growing up was like an amusement park tens of thousands of people you know up to a quarter of a million people came here to live in the bungalows and what would happen was the families would take it to save the whole year at the air of the year and the wife and the kids would stay in the bungalow all week long and go to the beach and the boardwalk and then the husband was lived in the Bronx or Manhattan or wherever they live working all week and then on the weekend they would come and join them coming up it was kind of crazy it was tough you had to be a tough kid you couldn't really show your feelings got to be high and when I was coming up but definitely there was nothing here like Playland was here but when I was coming up it's the aftermath completely so we used to play in a rock scene and have dirt ball fights and do stupid stuff like that if he wasn't fighting and trying to protect on taking but yeah I'm just remember because I live right on 9 th Street where platelet was so I vote right down the block hop over the fence play with the little the pieces of the carnival that's left over do little stuff like that you know but we had to be real creative if you wanted to stay away from their trouble you know what happened was that the Buffalo started getting older and more dilapidated and the owners just bungalows you know just wanted to make money fix them up most of them were in heated you know and then what happened was when when airplane travel became prevalent in the highways became Katie heated a lot of the places and air-conditioning he came along you didn't have to come to Rockaway to be cool in the summer people stopped coming here and the city and its wisdom decided to use those bungalows and those rooming houses for welfare cases so they brought in people from all over the city and put them in the bungalows G around without sometimes for that heat you know sometimes they were fire traps to it they were lots of you know really large fires and it's not becoming a place where people came for this summer you could stay at home and turn on the air-conditioning there's a lot of crime and Rockaway people are afraid to come here in the summer you know Rockley became some of the worst slums in the city Redfern the bundle was a big red fern and the bungalow is hidden down here became some of the worst slums in America for a short time hello welcome to our burn by the sea New York's newest oceanfront award-winning town this is our oceanfront master-planned community which is comprised of 127 acres so when we're finished we will have a total of 2,300 homes right on the beach block we have over five miles for you to enjoy and then in addition we're going to bring in at YMCA thank you so much for taking this tour with me today our two family homes range from the high 500 to a little over a million remember live by the ocean get ready for the fun what was your first reaction when they started the building was that they trying to get that stuff out of here that's the first thing that came to my mom because the houses was so expensive and the people that started to move in were not you know there wasn't regulars you know you got oriental people you got whole bunch of different cultures moving in that wouldn't be used to the regular Rockaway life so I think it's great I mean Rocco is come back there was a time in the 60s and 70s when you couldn't ride on Rockaway Beach Boulevard without getting robbed weather or without you know life's been threatened and today that you know that's changed to a large extent it's a new housing project solver and by the she's brought a lot of people with money directly young middle class money not rich people but middle class money new stores are opening a new supermarket on 73rd Street the Y is coming so things are looking up with sponsor change in Far Rockaway it's definitely the beach I'll have this beach I think everybody would say disease because that's all we have yes that's the main attraction of rivalry so definitely the beach cuz snow in the summertime come out and see the girls it's like one of the only beaches bro beaches in New York City so you know I know people come from all over even while it's dirty and that stuff people would still come from all over just to go so please have a good time so I guess you know people who've seen that scene that area that the same got the beat they just invest on and make it a big attraction well the land was there and it was oceanfront pushing front land and crime was down significantly enough so that people said they would live here if somebody built something affordable you know middle-class affordable and the city took a shot you know and they built and and people came all those houses are sold a nice you know and now the people who are in there had their voices to the voices of the other people fighting for better transportation and more jobs and and commercial developments toys and stuff like that so I mean yes it's just you gotta take the girl with the bed you definitely gotta take to go with the bed and it ain't all good so part of the problem is is kids can't afford to live in Rockaway the kids grow up and Rockaway they want to stay here and then they get married and they have kids and and they they can't afford a house notice they have a big down payment but the house is and luckily are very expensive because they're all there on the beach I think that's one of the major problems is making the housing stock more affordable so that the Rockaway people who want to stay in Rockaway will be able to do it I plan on living in Rockaway forever because I'm seeing what my mother told me and I was young come true like when she first moved here when I was a kid it was nothing but empty lots a lot of big grassy fields it was really nothing and she always told me that one day people would take interest in Rockaway again and build it back up for what it used to be and now I'm seeing that with my own eyes come true so I definitely want to stay here for the big shebang you know I'm saying and I definitely love with that geographically I like that it's far away from everything it's like your own little personal Peninsula I really like that what do you see broccoli no I just Oh fun here - Cheers I'm 72 I just hope I'm here to see it
