transistors new nano technology based devices and and so forth another example is is optics which is my own area of expertise and looking at the the physics of light propagation and interactions with men matter and applications to such things as biomedicine so so applied physics is a is a way for people with a physics background to get into engineering and more applied areas that are relevant to real-world problems and in fact approximately half inside or slightly more than half of all applied physics students do their coursework on central campus and come up and work with engineering faculty on North Campus the way that usually works is you will start as as a first year student taking introductory courses and in your second semester do a directed study project and that directed study in plasma physics and relativistic optics that occurs in the laser target interactions much of my work is actually concerned with with ultra-fast optics as applied to optoelectronics this can include terahertz generation and detection and imaging applications in Iraq with 35 semiconductors exciting new materials such as graphene which is a single layer of carbon atoms turns out to be very exciting for for both optics and electronic applications and the area of plasmonics which is the physics of small metal nanoparticles and these are all active areas of research not only my own group it in a number of other research groups in electrical engineering and material science and again I would mention that applied physics is is inherently a very interdisciplinary subject so you are certainly going to collaborate with with groups from from from across the campuses at the University finally I would mention one more rapidly growing area in Applied Physics is in physics related to biomedicine particularly there is an active Center in the medical school for nanotechnology in the medical and biological sciences and for students that are interested in either optics or electronic measurements there are many interesting physics problems that are related to nanotechnology at in fundamental biological science as well as in medical applications one of the interesting things about and unique things about applied physics at Michigan is that it is a graduate program it is not a department there are a number of applied physics departments around the country and they tend to be rather small and often focused in particular research areas and one of the exciting things about Applied Physics as a program means that that when you come in and and finish your course work that you have an enormous variety of programs which to choose and their interest range from from from plasma physics and and and and astrophysics to nanotechnology and so you have this incredible array of Graham's research programs which to choose and you're not confined to working with one of a particular null five or ten faculty who may be in a small department so although it is a program without its its own
