Mooney at University Medical Center at Tulane in New Orleans they took absolute care of me and and you know it's an incredible miracle and you've had an incredible year since then you you got your medical degree you've just you're finishing up an internship year of orthopedic surgery residency at a hospital not far from here how often do you go back and think about that day I mean I think about that day every single day of my life there's not a day that passes by and you know there are a lot of people in this country that are affected by gun violence and there are a lot of people watching here today that know somebody that's been affected or have been affected themselves and to be sitting here talking to you and have this voice I I feel I hope I'm not only speaking for myself but speaking for some of them as well to you you wanted to speak and give a statement at the sentencing of the man who shot you can I read a little portion of what you said I woke up too late to days later in the hospital surrounded by family and a group of best friends this moment will forever be the happiest moment in my life I was alive you hadn't killed me and with my family by my side I knew I would bounce back stronger than ever strong enough to stand face-to-face with you again why was it so important to be able to say that I think I was one of the most silver linings in this entire thing was when I woke up in the hospital a group of 10 of my best friends have flown down to New Orleans my family was there and it was just such a special moment of recovery to know that you're there with your family and friends and that I was going to be able to get through this you mentioned your family I want to remind viewers at the time you were robbed shot and almost killed you were on the cell phone with your mom she heard and actually your dad too because it was on speakerphone they heard this entire thing happening to you on the phone how has this impacted them I mean it was completely traumatic and it's one of the things I said to him in court too that you know that what someone's action could you do something causes more than just that direct action it's a it's a ripple effect everybody else and originally this was traumatic for my friends and family and and all of us are looking forward and trying to do something positive with what's happening you were on that Sidewalk that night because you stopped to help someone you didn't even know who was in trouble there is no question you are a hero would you today stop to do the same thing I think it was it was completely instinctual what I did you know I'm driving by and I see a man dragging a girl across the ground you saw the video they and nobody's mind is that right and I hope if I'm faced with the same situation that that I would act again to help out somebody new you you want to make good out of this you're starting a foundation called strong City you want to help young people who fall through the cracks why is it so important for you to kind of create a cause surrounding this one of the first things I started talking about my friends and family when I woke up in the hospital and I'm thinking about it again here watching this video is what happened in somebody's life that they were able to create such violence with such ease without even thinking about it you know what happened in his community what happened at school what happened with his family and what strong City aims to do is through fundraising at my strong City org we want to support community-based organizations who are already doing an amazing job at empowering underserved youth and starting at the root focusing on kids and their developmental journey begins you're an impressive young man and I really appreciate your spending time with us this morning thank you and I'm glad you're doing so well back University there we should mention you can find more information on strong city it's on our website today dot-com hello today fans thanks for checking out our youtube channel subscribe by clicking that button down there and click on any of the videos over here to watch the latest interviews show highlights and digital exclusives public health capstone project examples for money School of Medicine.
